What kind of specific extensions would you all like to see?

I mean, if you could choose to create any special extension for a particular topic, what would it be?

The first one I would suggest is .blog. It would be absolutely perfect for blogs, a great indicator of the content inside and its memorable too.

So showcase your creativity and share your ideas! Maybe they'll take notice. :)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
I think there are enough good GTLDs and more than enough crappy ones like .name, .pro etc. Plus there are cctlds. I dont think we need new extensions.

It'll probably take us to a scenario where we wont know which is domain & which is the extension!

.blog is a good one.
Many people will argue that there are already too many exts on the internet and that more will only add to the current confusion. I take the position that the current confusion is the result of too many exts/gtlds/cctlds being used in ways that extend outside the scope of the purpose that they were intended for.
Ironically, more new gtlds- specifically, those that are intuitive and content specific- may be the best solution for reorganizing or, at least, for bringing more order to the net. Organizing the net via content-specific gtld's, (ie .org, .Info, .biz, .mobi), would require regulation and enforcement, (ie if the site doesn't comply, the owner is warned and if multiple infracions occur, he loses rights to the domain.) Some might argue that policing the regs would be too large of a hurdle for a plan like this too work but if a quick, easy process were put into place for user's to file complaints, enforcement wouldn't be as large of an obstacle as one might think. (There are also methods of penalizing those filing false complaints.) Additionally, SE spiders could be employed to comb the net searching for abuse.

Some of the content specific exts could include:

.ref- general reference, ie dictionaries, encyclopedias, data bases.
.med- medical
.dir- directories/ directory portals. Addition thru subtraction. By isolating general directory pages/sites and limited them to this name space, the other namespaces would benefit. One of the, obvious, results of grouping the directory pages into a single namespace would be quicker searches and more relevant results. ppc advertising would convert to "ppr", (pay per result- hehe), advertising. All of the former "ppcers" would be fighting like h~ll to make sure their sites wouldn't fall under this category. Why? Because traffic is going to be scarce in a namespace that is filled w/ generic directory pages. To realize income, domain name marketers would need to develop content-based sites to attract visitors. Advertisers would be happy as their income/advertising dollar spent adjusted upwards. ppcers would be unhappy because they would need to do some honest, hard work to earn a living.
.dvd- video/music/streaming content

Well the point of this discussion was to identify ones that would be useful, not ones that are already in existance and are admittedly quite pointless. :P

Grrilla, I absolutely love the .dir idea. There are so many of these directories about, giving them their own space would be brilliant.

I agree with that too. More organisation and regulation is the way forward. ;)

The thought just occurred to me that in addition to it's intuitiveness, there is a sardonic side to .dir. As in "dire" straits or consequences. :hehe:

There could be thousands...

.host
.learn
.read
.sound/.music
.bb (bb forums)
.talk
.chat
.shop
.game(s)

Only problem is that after EU, most of the registrys would probably try to cash in.

.blog, .game, .chat, .live.
These all sound great to me, but I'm sure it'll take a while for them to get official (a very long while)

.host and .shop are both awesome. I actually thought of host earlier....

Keep them coming! :D
