Why use a registrar other than GoDaddy

I kind of like GoDaddy. They are transparent, offer good service, and their prices are good. Coupons are also generally available for reduced prices.

So what's my point?

As I look at domains for sale there are a couple of them that I would like to purchase. However, both of them are regged somewhere other than GoDaddy. I know I can get a free account at these other registrars. However, when I get to the point of registering at the bottom of the form there is a check box about reading their contract. At that point I look at the contract, get bewildered at all the the legalese, don't know what I am getting into so I close the screen and forget about registering with that registrar.

If everyone used GoDaddy things would be so much easier.

Anyway that's my rant.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Then we'd have a monopoly, and up goes the domain prices. Bad idea. Competition is needed else prices go sky high.

Lots of stuff in the Godaddy contract, too. A few months ago they found a guy with a non-working email address on his whois. They did not try to phone or write, they took his paid-up name and sold it for a lot of money to someone else. I am sorry I do not remember the details, there was a thread here, some posters were angry, others said that the guy did not keep his email address up to date and deserved it.

Point being that this is a young industry and there are lots of things wrong with every registrar.

I agree, competition is good. I should change my rant to say only those people who use NamePros and are active in selling domains.

At one registrar I had a couple of domains that I had purchased from somewhere (I think it was pool.com). Their registrar is NameScout if my memory serves me. After I got the domains I noticed that in their small print there was a $30 charge of something like that if you transfer the domain away from them. I emailed them about it to complain and they said "Oh we don't enforce that". Pool.com is a reputable place mind you so I'm thinking possibly many have these hidden charges that they may or may not enforce.

So the bottom line for me is that it just isn't worth the trouble to deal with another registrar. I have purchased domains here that used other registrars and for me it is a hastle to keep track of them (thank god for bookmarks).

FamilyAlbum.com I think it was? If LLLL's ever become worth big bucks, I'll be moving everything over to Moniker from Godaddy, lest I make a whois mistake and find myself out XXX,XXX :'(

While GD it the largest registrar with over 15 million domain names under management there are some good reasons to avoid them (just search this forum).
IMO they are not that bad... but you are just a number unless you have your own rep.
As for ownership transfers, they are not making things easier for us with their silly 60-day rules.
Anyway if I want a name I will purchase it whatever the current registrar (with the exception of registerfly).

Just wait until have have 3 names you want to reg you can't find a "coupon" hello 9.99.
Everybody has legalese.
If you are going to buy & sell you are going to have to have accounts at various registrars.
Would you pass on purchasing a stellar domain at a good value just because it's registered somewhere else?? Not very rational.

But you said in the OP it's a rant, so I hope feel better! :)

Other registrars I use, Enom, Moniker, don't force me to go through page after page of sales offers to get anything done.

That is one thing that does suck about GoDaddy. This Moniker sounds interesting to me.

I'd recommend that you get accounts at eNom, Moniker, GoDaddy, Dynadot, NameCheap, Answerable, Whiz.in, Fabulous and Namescout (many of my Pool drops are there) if you're serious about domaining

I do use GoDaddy but I prefer Moniker and I'm using them more now. Their control panel is easier to use, I get good reseller prices and it's easy to transfer in and out. The only thing I don't like is that forwarding is not free.

If you ask for the Namepros special pricing at Moniker you get 301 forwarding free. You have to go through checkout for it which is a little strange, but the price is $0. 301 (permanent) forwarding is best for SEO, most places give you 302 (temporary).

Moniker Namepros pricing went up to $7.40 (I think that's right) while GD ate the increase and still is $7.20, with coupon (try HASH3). But Godaddy's control pannel is so slow, it almost is worth the difference.

I have some names at GD, they are cheapest on some extensions (.com, .org, .info ). I do not mean to be so harsh on them, besides Danika is sooooo nice.

See today's edition of DomainNameWire.com for a recap, links to original story and GoDaddy's apparent policy change:

Go Daddy has the slowest control panel among all registrars

GOdaddy's prices keep pulling higher away from other registrars, and to me, its less justifiable, since many other registrars can offer a good deal too at a reasonable price. Besides, registering alot of domain names(like many @ NP probably do) will cost you way more @ godaddy than other registrars with their prices.

GetDaddy.com

1) Because they aren't the cheapest.
2) Too much mumbo jumbo on their site. You almost need a map to get around.
3) If you don't do alot of unckecking, you wind up paying $348.84 for a $10 .com
4) How many other domain websites need to hire pretty girls to draw business?
5) I just don't like em, they suck!<<<<<<<<<< :) >>>>>>> My own personal biased opinion! I like >>>>>>>>>> www.Whiz.in<<<<<<<<<<<< Yes!!! advertising for Whiz. Simple. Easy. Quick.

Godaddy' s name should be GetDaddy.com . Get the hell out if here, Daddy!! :yell:

GoDaddy uses Cetergy as their collections agent. If you have one three dollar bill go astray, they immediately send it to that company, who then tries to charge you $25 in addition to the three dollars. So, because of some misunderstanding, you owe 28.95 instead of 3.95.

GoDaddy has partnered with a shark, and I hate them both.

Godaddy.com is crude. What other professional company uses women with sexual hype trying to diswade you from going anywhere else? I see little to no advertising like that at other places and find them distasteful. Heck you can't imagian how many women domain! I know of some that will not use them for that reason alone.

It's the sleazy look that bothers me, besides going there to check to see if a name is available and find less then a few hours later some taster has picked it up. These people have been doing that for a long time.
I think Godaddy is very very unprofessional.
I agree also on the navigation and they are so loaded with junk you try to click on something and find you arrow has been hijacked!
Nope, I go with Moniker, they have so much to offer with the radio programs, auctions with live feeds etc. They are overall very professional and every penny is worth it. I have even used Yahoo in the old day and they were far better than Godaddy.
If I find I am in trouble, or can't find something at moniker I get quick responses every time. I don't have to wait on the phone for long periods or days by email.

here's a reason,
I foolishly let a name expire, it's in redemption now, I called them, they told me that if I wanted it back now I'd have to pay 80.00 PLUS new reg fee.
I am not a huge baller for them but I have probably 30 domains with them as well as 5 hosting accounts!
meanwhile, namecheap let me get a name back in the same manner for reg fee.
other than that, i have been very happy with them [GD]
so there ya go :imho:
