Why I think .tel domains are useless

Well I got my self couple .tel domains when they were released, and I was surprised that I could get things like yellowpages in other languages, now i know why . You can not actually develop a .tel domain into a business directory such as a yellow pages site. Its not possible because of the limitations they have on it, the 3000 folder limit. Whats all that about? Im not a domainer in any way at all, so correct me if im wrong, but i hired a developer to get one of my .tel domains developed. I have little bit over 20k companies that i wanted to make a directory of. Well it didnt go so well, apparently the limit is ending the project. So my question is WHAT is .tel domains for? there is a 3000 folder limit so that means its NOT for a single business to use as a business card (but it surely can, and looks like its the only thing its useful for), but with the limit you cant make a huge directory what so ever any way.. For now i think .tel domains is the worst thing ever that has happened, they just suck, you cant use them for nothing..

If you want to make a huge yellowpages type directory, there are very nice scripts out there that can do that for you. However, you need a tld that allows you to host your own website.

it seems perfect for smaller businesses specially those who are not very targeted to the online world. also great for larger types to build a portal of their page.

So true. Personally I have always found that the directory concept in .tel didn't make sense. At the very least you need decent search features.

At least 3 years from now,you develop 20k companies into .tel means waste time and money.
At the same time,telnic open more dir to your kinds of customer means waste time and money.
Try to devlelop 3000 companies then stop to look around.

if you have 20k companies, you want them all under a single domain? With each one having its own directory? If so, then yes you'll hit the current limits on the free community telhosting platform: 3,000 domains of 100 contact records each, so that's 300,000 contact records. We've had to put limits to make sure the system didn't get abused, while preparing the policies and free software for anyone to host their own .tel TelHosting system.

I can name many uses...

I purchased MarkFulton.tel for myself... it would be much easier to place this on my business card than my complete mailing address, email, phone, etc.

Small business advertising... maybe they don't have a website yet or would be ineficient for their company to maintain a website (plumber, lawn maintenance, whatever...), but they still need to get customers their contact details! Use a .tel for this.

I'm sure there are a hundred other ways... just because you can't develop a site or flip a .tel domain doesn't make it useless.

You could spend some cheap dollars getting a few more and link between them?
There is no hosting cost, there is no monthly traffic cost.

They are also working on a search feature that will be added to the domains...

What does it do that any other TLD can't? I have all my contact information on a .com, and nobody has any trouble finding it.

Its only as good as what you use it for.

I like the concept enough to have taken 20 or so nice ones.

I've heard you can have email addresses at your tel too, expands my usage.

It isn't useless for personal use. If someone wants to list their online spots in one location, I see some value there. That doesn't mean I think it's going to catch on though. As I said in the big .tel thread, the registrars will need to become more willing to sell and provide tech support for something that isn't a B2B service. If GoDaddy starts selling .tel and pushes it hard to the general public, then it might make me stop and think.

Business use.... forget about it. We are seeing more and more .com page generator services that are actually pretty decent. They have come a long way since Geocities. There is no reason to settle for a textual "online business card" anymore. The stuff about .tel domains replacing phone numbers is just a fantasy.

I personally feel, that .tel is doing a good thing to have a limit on the sub folders as Henri said it can be abused to clarify the word abuse in .tel i think it might make the system being over used for no good reason as you can even develop a .tel with programing via soap ( i have no knowledge about programming so if i said it wrong sorry about it ) and make massive directories.

currently i did not think it was possible for some domains to have an exception but happy to hear that they are willing to do that for a genuine cause, i have directories like

Global HIV AIDS Related Directory

Global Marine Parts Directory.

My Quran, Complete Holy Quran on .tel

which are small now but i do believe it can go long way and i would surely need the limit to be increased for me and i guess i got my answer that its possible.

coming to the use of .tel the way it was advertised 70% for personal use and 30% for commercial so as we can see the more use is of personal use like myself Shahid Khan there would be no reason to give me a limit of more then 3000 as it would be of no use to me.

what i think .tel should do is a link ont heir community website which says

" incase you feel that the limit of 3000 is less for you send us your .tel information

1) what the directory is about ? for consideration
2) should have 500 + used to get more space as many could just ask for the service and not even utilize it
3) it would be even nice to make .tel in 2 catogeries in their system
a) Personal
b) Business

so lets say if anyone needs upgrade they just change the category or
even get tailor made requirements :D

i use .tel on my daily basis and trust me its good and helps a lot.

It looks like we can agree on that .tel domains are good for "YOUR" business and not for some one that builds websites (admins), there is no point in building a directory with 3k businesses. Hopefully Im wrong and Henri can show me the right way..

.tel domains are great to own. They are like billets of precious paper that you can scribble sweet little notes on. You can give them as gifts. You can trade or sell them. You can use your leftover latte and write the URL on the window of the last train to Bronx.

But you can't develop them.
