Who here is actually waiting for the .tel domain? I personally cant wait for them. I know that there will be some restrictions like no numbers, but I still see good potential in this. Personally I think .Tel should have launched before .Mobi.

Is it a gTLD? What does it stand for?

I can see it being another "failure".
I can only see global company's using them, or being used for "domain hacks". I'd be surprised if more than a couple get developed.

.tel is not intended for websites, it's more an infrastructure TLD.
It's safe to say that we can live without it :bah:

Really. Hmm. I was under the impression there was lots of regulations, but you could still get some. There goes my dreams.

:hi:

I would highly recommend reading the lively discussion of the .TEL here in an earlier thread: http://www.namepros.com/416800-tel-4.html?highlight=.tel :gl: :imho:

Member VURG (in particular) and others, including myself, have noted delays with the release of the .TEL extension (which I consider to be, from a pure branding perspective, a "natural" insofar as it being immediately and effectively able to brand and market for mobile usage, IMHO). This ease to which it is shorter, one syllable, and highly brandable ... presents a serious challenge to other, newer extensions that are far more problematic (longer, two syllables, clumsy) to brand and market, in my judgement.

There are still a lot of questions regarding the .TEL, however ... and whether, at the end of the day, the domains will be marketed and intended for actual websites, as mentioned both here and in the referenced link! :?: :gl:
More to come, surely ... and just my two sense.

As I have understood it .tel will not support websites - a .tel name would connect the user to a directory of the various options available to communicate with a person or corporation - telephone land line, cell phone, fax, email - whatever. The user would click their choice and be connected. How much information would be possible to display is one question, but the intent is to be a one stop access point for communication.

.Tel is not a competitor to .mobi at all.

I think it is a short term money spinner.

There is no question about it. The .TEL extension is not for websites. Go to www.Ben.tel and http://www.telnic.org/faq.html and PLEASE stop comparing this ext to "dot mobey" Jeff.

I'm not comparing the two extensions ... I simply stated that the, "highly brandable .TEL ... presents a serious challenge to other new and newer extensions that are far more "problematic" (longer, two syllables, clumsy) to brand and market, in my judgement." Again, this was posted from a branding perspective!

Please read the entire discussion in the referenced link/thread for additional clarification, as well! :gl:
Thanks for your understanding.

Do you mean "challenge" as in...

chalยทlenge
1. A call to engage in a contest, fight, or competition: a challenge to a duel.

...or is there some other definition you're going for?

Another unnecessary domain... It's no use buying .tel domain names... dot mobi is enough.

Translation:
"I'm comparing this extension to dotMobi, but I continue to deny it, thus insulting the intelligence of other members in the process."

We're not 3rd graders Jeff. Everyone that reads this thread can see right through your posts.

Furthermore, anyone with more than one brain cell knows that the two extensions have different purposes and absolutely nothing in common.

So for one last time, please stop insulting our intelligence.

In this context, it's an obstacle IMHO. :guilty:
Main Entry: obยทstaยทcle
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin obstaculum, from obstare to stand in front of, from ob- in the way + stare to stand โ€” more at ob-, stand
Date: 14th century
: something that impedes progress or achievement

Also, please note that I posted above twice in the context of a branding perspective, as well!
^ Seanboy, please take note here as well!

I also believe that a LOT of the :$: money not going to the '08 / '09 renewals of the "dot Mobey" ... will be redirected instead to the highly brandable .TEL namespace, as well! :talk: :imho:

All the confusion as to the purpose of .tel makes me wonder about the future of the ext. It's gonna take a hell of a lot of advertising to make people "get it".

I personally like the idea of the extension and especially the devices, device functionality and software that may be brought to market because of the ext.

For those who don't know, the purpose of the extension is to provide a contact page for businesses and individuals to list ALL of the ways they can be contacted. The pages will look like Rolodex file cards (see www.ben.tel) with hotlinks that will activate software or hardware devices to make contact via that particular method (such as Skype, fax, mobile, VoIP, telephone, email, SMS, AIM etc). Each page will have a vCard (.vcf) download link to allow people to easily store the contact information for that person or business in their address book.

Ironically, I think it'll be more likely to succeed if domainers don't "get it".

My point here has been the opposite ... it'll take a heck of a lot LESS advertising (branding) for the natural and highly brandable .TEL extension than some of the other newer, and longer, and more clumsy (and thus more difficult to brand effectively) extensions! :red: :imho:
