.tel is coming soon. It is supposed to launch first half of 2008.

No matter how much I read about it, I can't fully grasp what it is.

Does anybody completely understand it? Please enlighten me. In some ways, it just seems like an electronic business card so you know how to contact a company.

www.indom.tel is an example of what they may look like.

Some think it overlaps with .mobi, but .tel people say that isn't true.

Too confusing. I think I will stay away from it.

Yes, it's basically intended to simply be an electronic business card that anyone can access at any time. It would always have your latest contact info there and presumably could allow others to just click to call you, e-mail, etc.

There really isn't any competition/overlap with .mobi here -- although some people assume it's similar simply because of the "telephone"-related extension name. It's not intended to bring you to a full-fledged site -- although I don't know if there would be anything in place that would prevent someone from doing so.

In addition, individuals can use the .Tel domain to publish and update their contact information directly in the DNS. These individuals will decide, in real-time, by what means their friends and colleagues will be able to reach them. This could include: VoIP, conventional telephony (fixed-line or wireless), email, SMS, Skype, AIM and many more.
Actually you can already enter information in the DNS, that's what the TXT records are for (they are used for SPF as well).
That looks like another pretty bogus tld to me
