Hi, I am just curious about why people buys domains.

Is it...
- to resell?
- to develope?
- to collect?

I my self is a mix of all above. Some domains I buy to resell, some to develope and some I just like to collect.

I have lately realized that, as weird as it might sound, some people buys a domain just to own it. They are not thinking of selling it or developing it, they just like the idea to own it. Like collectors who collect stamps or something like that.

I am one of those people myself.

So why do you buy domains?

But my registration fingers work a lot faster than my develop fingers.

Boy, do I know how that goes :) And once you have one get registered while you are thinking about it, the "Buy it Now" itchy trigger finger syndrome really takes over.

I buy, and renew, domains to keep certain registrars well funded so they can throw a '$2 million dollar' employee Xmas party!! And I didn't even get an invite..! :(

I buy to hold (collect) then down the track will sell when I feel like it or when I get the right offer

I buy domains so I have less money to pay for cigarettes, hopefully pro-longing my life in the process.

I don't sell and I don't develope so I guess I'm more of a collector than anything. I make a little change on the side with it..so it's all good. :)

well, i can answer that question for you lol, this is 'namepros' a domainers forum primarily so most will resell

duh :)

But are you surprised that almost as many people think of themselves as developers or "collectors" first, rather than resellers here so far?

I do not buy domains. Just register domains free to earn money on parking.

I collect quality generic domains for future resale, I also like the process of selling domains here in my local .NZ aftermarket.

Why do you buy domains?
For several reasons...
  • I'm obsessive compulsive
  • Have an addictive personality
  • Am self destructive
  • Suffer from delusions of grandeur
  • Feel that being able to afford 3 meals a day is just WAY over rated...

All of the above, but here are my percentages:

Out of approx 650 domains:

- 150-200 for my own development projects. (I'm counting names that have had sites up on them for some time). 90% of names I've regg'd in the past 3 months have been for development, most of them for one specific project.
- About a dozen because I thought they were fun to own (collect).
- At least 100 which won't be renewed.
- the remainder for resale, though some of them may eventually move to the "development" or "drop" categories.

Of the 300+ I own, only mortalkombat.info is being developed. Well, I have 2 others developed but I'm looking to sell them. The rest of my domains are more or less for sale.

As suspected the number 1 reason people, who has visited my thread and answered my question, here in NamePros buy domains for reselling.

But it surprise me that "collect" and "develop" is neck on neck, I would have thought that develope would be a clear second. :)

Of course the larger number of people answering the poll, the better the more true the result will be, so please keep on voting.

In my opinion,
Domain is like digital property.... Like you own Credit Card, Building, cars and other stuffs.....Domain is also an property.
I buy domain to increase my assets and to be rich..... :D

Resell, Develop and Collect are some thing that can be done with domains...

Hey I want to vote for both dev and resell. It depends on the offer, timing and plan. If there is a good offer before I start dev the domain, most probably I'll save my time and just let it go :)
