Why do people register rubbish domains??

I was looking through the auctions page on the GoDaddy app and was surprised to see so many rubbish domains for sale - things like 00270.info, pomohocom.com etc.

These were in the bargain basement section (for good reason) at $5. They probably cost more than $5 to originally reg them.

Perhaps they seem like rubbish domains to me but not to others?

00270 is no doubt a postal code somewhere, so probably a geo domain that didn't get traffic or never got developed.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

It's also possible that these domains are just bad domains and the person registering them did not realize they were bad domains at the time.

Or they could be domains that were formally getting traffic. A lot of terrible domains are sold on the aftermarket that are bringing in a lot of traffic (they could have been previously developed) but the traffic fades away if you don't do anything with the domain.

Or they could have been domains registered with an idea in mind to develop, and the person just never got around to developing it.

There's many, many reasons.

Sometimes you buy a group of domains at once from a seller, and there are a few stinkers in there. Instead of turning them down - why not try to get $5 until they expire? :)

When i see a domain being peddled for 5 bucks, it tells me he is having a hard time selling it. So instead of paying 5 bucks, i just wait for the domain to expire. Sure enough it did. Then i snagged it with a Godaddy 1.99 coupon.

Did it once before. Saved me about 3 bucks. lol

It typically comes down to experience and budget.

Few people truly understand what makes a great domain, even among domainers.
But since so many domains are already taken (remember 100M just in .com), people lose patience, don't have adequate search skills, and settle for whatever was left.
For low-key development like a personal site a premium domain is not a must-have.

Lots of times they are simply domaining under the influence. Do NOT drink and domain ! I see tons of crappy names on the drop list and godaddy closeouts.

I also see lots of trademark names.
