hey everyone,

Has anyone ever done bulk searches and found that when you check somwhere else, they are not available like whois.sc told you?

1. Go to http://www.whois.sc/bulk-check
2. Insert 'cap' and submit it

See that it says that cap.info is available!... well it's not!

Why does it get this and so many other domains' availablities WRONG?

:td:

This has been happening there for a while, especially with .us domains. This is the first time I have seen it happen with a .info.

If you check out the following link, you will indeed see that the domain is not available

http://whois.sc/cap.info

Whois Source has indexed millions of domain names. To make a mistake is very possible.

Whois.sc is VERY SLOW to update, it's normal.

This happens with .info quite frequently -- it's a good workout: gets my heart racing for about 15 seconds before domainsite brings me back to equilibrium. :hehe:

I've noticed this too with a couple domains. Nothing major other than the adrenaline rush as rocketfly mentioned.

I often notice registery reserved names as showing available there. I see a lot of .us and .org names show available when they're not as well.

That particular name is in an inactive status and most likely has been since it was first registered so it will probably never show the right info until it's taken off inactive status and put to some kind of use.

You can't use it as a valid availability tool. It will give you an idea of roughly where the domain is but if domains drop and they haven't done an update since then it's going to show the previously cached info. If a domain shows available and it's not then most likely it's been reregistered in the recent past and they haven't updated aswell. Their BW bill would be astronomical if they had to check every quesry from up to the second status. There have been days where I've spent most of my day running combos through it. And I'm sure you can multiply me by atleast a few thousand of other oeple doing the same.

As far as .org is concerned the registry has been real screwy with queries. They are getting as bad as netsol use to be way back and blocking them. The last bulk list I ran from my PC .org had me blocked. Haven't tried again since. I may be blocked for good but I'm assuming it is after X amount of query requests without registry access.

All in all it's not necessarily a whois.sc issue it's when and from where they obtain their information from..

It's been getting searches wrong for a long time, with all types of extensions. Just like Yahoo's domain search gets them wrong frequently.

You need to be careful when using whois.sc. For instance a name can show up as available in the 'grid matrix' but when clicking on details to see whois the name suddenly shows up as available... and it is actually available for registration.
They must be using a lot of cached whois info.
It's an interesting tool but don't rely too much on it. Always double-check the names of interest to you. That being said, their monitor feature is useful to keep track of domains soyou get notified when they expire or change status etc.

Until now, some people seem to think they'll get authoritative results when
using whois.sc for WHOIS lookups. Sheesh.

Folks, remember that the best WHOIS to use for a domain name is none other
than the sponsoring registrar's itself. 3rd party WHOIS services can only do so
much, especially if the registrar starts limiting WHOIS queries by other sites.

For example, I sometimes use iwhois.com for WHOIS lookups. But they're not
always able to .show the entire WHOIS of a netsol-registered domain.

I use use 2 or more Whois sites to check on domains. Not all whois are perfect you know :D

Whois.sc shows any domain (any ext) as available if there's no nameservers assigned to a domain. Which is wrong since a domain can be taken, but not hosted or parked, so there's no need of nameservers.

Last night I almost had a heart attack because I saw this.
http://whois.sc/888.US
Ahh, i did another search and what did it say?:

888.us Available O_O

Edit: That may be because it is reserved, though whois.sc does have previous whois history though =\
