Just tried to do a whois check at whois.sc (now domaintools ... stupid name, fantastic looking site) and it requires registration. I hate sites that require registration ... I guess I'll be taking my whois searches elsewhere.

Ya, not many people are too happy about this, I myself am one.

Oulzac: You are happy about the forced registration?

No xombie, what I mean is I am not happy about and will not use them anymore, and the same for a lot of people, sorry if I worded that funny ;)

They have required forced registration for as long as I can remember.
They allow you to do a certain amount of WHOIS queries per day.
If you exceed the quota, then they force you to register.
This is to prevent automated WHOIS queries.

Yes, that's true. They have ever only allowed 5 searches today without registration. Signup is very easy at Domaintools, just enter your email, click the link, and enter your password. You also get lots of other features including whois history checks. :)

if you listened to the interview with jay westerdal and me, you would have known about this :)

Stop complaining about a free service, they do this cause anonymous users like yourself hound it and slow it down a bunch for normal users.

I obviously haven't exceeded their quote in the past.

Either way, I'll be 'whoising' elsewhere from now on!

domaintools rocks! you just register and click remember me and you are loged in everytime you come back... and I don't think i have EVER recieved any email/spam from them.

they provide a great free service and seems silly to knock them just becasue they want you to register

Hey guys, thanks for bringing this to our attention. There are still some bugs on the site, assuming you have most browsers features turned on. You should be allowed 25 lookups without logging in. Please keep us posted.

I'm amazed people are deterred from signing up for a site for free to get a great service. There are a slew of sites I would have never known about and come to love if it wasn't for registering at them for free. I don't understand that line of thought.

Domaintools is part of my "Holy Trinity' with archive and the ov checker, they should put up a make donation box.

I, for one, love the new site and layout. As well, the whois results pages are better organized, and seem to be faster/more reliable.
The "forced registration" is a small price to pay to use the best in the game, :imho:

I love the new look as well -- it looks much more professional, and I love that some of the paid features before are now free :D

And I don't mind the free registration at all :)

I always got 20 searches before registration

i don't wanna spam, but you can use my free whois tool: http://whoist.be (needs some graphic work, but its working pretty good)

Not like it even works well, I bought silver and most of the tools dont even work. How professional is that? SQL and PHP errors in a whois search... *sigh*

Bulk Check doesnt even work.

I think most know WhoIs.sc - DomainTools.com as a trustworthy site. I have been reg'd with them for a couple of years now and never rec'd spam.
They offer very good features.
Now if only I didn't have to turn ZoneAlarm Cookie Control completely off to visit as a member....
For those considering free registration with them...go for it....they are the real deal.

They are also the Domain Roundtable people...
