I read an interesting article on The Domains asking the readers who they thought was the greatest domainer of all time. Why was it interesting? Because it didn’t ask the most important question, “By what measure?”

For instance, are we measuring someone’s success by the amount of money they earn or amount of profit? Whether they have built a sustainable business or sold one off high value domains? How about whether they actually give anything back to the industry versus take, take and then take some more? Or, how about how they treat others that may not be as monetarily successful as they are?

Can a person be regarded as “the greatest” if their personal life is a complete mess? They may have even sold a lot of high value domains and yet not have much to show for it after multiple family failures.

What does surprise me is that as far as I can tell there aren't many or if any non-USA based domain investors being suggested as being great.....I know for instance, there are a LOT of fantastic domain investors in Europe which are excelling at what they do.

The ones being mentioned use social media a lot especially twitter, share recent sales quite often, some of the information includes domain names, purchase prices and year acquired, for some of us to learn from. Some of them have shared some valuable information on domainsherpa or blogs in the past. So, they share valuable information for free on a regular basis.

Muhammad Ali, is the Greatest of All Time!

and you can't go around handing out that acclamation to anybody else-

at least, until they've done and or have been thru and walked in, the same type of shoes, as he did.

That's..... why he is, The Greatest of All Time.

ya heard

:)

still.... there are some who have done good things for so long, in that, what they've accomplished can be seen as "great"
as in providing a great place to do business and or discuss the business, in an environment that's "conducive". or if you've just been following the achievements of a select few with admiration, that, on it's own... may seem great to you.

imo.....

I can't answer who the greatest domainer of all time is.

I have learned a lot and still learning from all the domainers worldwide who are willing to share their knowledge online. The namepros platform for me is the #1 entity.

If I had to decide right now out of my gut with my limited knowledge I would say - Rick Schwartz! He is on the top of my list, imho!

I think it's either Trump or Hillary.

Ok, but I still don't see how Rick influenced domain investors, apart from boast that he is 'The Domain King' and infuriate other domainers.

The royal title is arbitrary, but the value is there.

Regarding positive influence by
@Rick Schwartz I've shared some tidbits at my blog over the years, including the "power of no" and how to stick to one's gut senses when offers arrive.

Rick's 10 year tenure as a founder and operator of TRAFFIC brought together the full spectrum of domain investors, from small fish to large fish. And whether he chooses at times to "rant" via Twitter, that's his way of being extrovert about his positions on investments and other wisdom accumulated over the course of two decades.

For me it is me because I am just like everyone else the self centered guy who thinks "everything revolves around me and I can control those things"

For others I don't have a clue as I am too much self centered :(

Although I enjoy everything Mike Mann related him being quite controversial and all, I'd have to vote for Frank for several reasons. The top reason being that his understanding of domains is solid as it gets (okay, minus his adventures in the ngtld land, which have always puzzled me, mainly his choices for strings to operate).

best domainer is someone who is investment $1000 dollars in domains and now he /she is millionaire from domaining

Canada for example is a land of domain pioneers and not just Yun Ye.

Also, there are top portfolio holders like Anything, Reflex publishing, Stenzel, Telepathy, Digimedia or Elequa etc that tend to keep a low profile so little is known about their financial achievements. Not to mention notable members such as @GeorgeK :)

I don't think we can answer a question like that really. Some domainers are great but I am not sure there is one who is 'greatest' (whatever that means) than others. But I know that some domainers are underestimated. Some domainers bring positive exposure to our industry, while others bring negative exposure (TM squatting or dubious commercial practices, that of course includes registries and registrars). Some domainers are great in the sense that they give back to the community while others are a disgrace and an embarrassment. IMHO.

I agree with these lists too.

With different views/opinions. I guess this is somewhat subjective title and should not be use with respect to others who play low profile.

I don't know who is the "best domainer". But for me anyone which know how to sell a domain to end user & convert them into paying customers are best domainer. I have seen lot's of " best domainer" here.

Rick Schwartz
Mike Mann
Frank Shilling

In that order imo. But all are legends.

I reckon the same 3 but each have helped the domain industry in some way

All three are on twit and reading their tweets etc

Frank is always smiling trying to break the most air miles ever achieved lol or so it would appear

But building up a large portfolio of domains as an investor and owning registries and a registrar etc

Rick loves gtlds lol er not at all but provides valuable insight in to how domaining was back in the beginning etc and where it is today etc

Mm sells domains no one would think of buying for extremely good prices and too gives domaining advice freely via tweets

A question which could be answered in manyyy ways - and also through a domain.

What I can sayyy for sure, is, that whoever is the greatest domainer of all time, will get the domains

thegreatestdomainerofalltime.top

THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME

thegreatestdomainerofalltime.com
THE GREATEST DOMAINER OF ALL TIME

from me - if I am willing to sell them.
Currently (and since I registered them last year) I use them as forwarders, seems that I am the greatest domainer of all time.

By any measure, @Rick Schwartz has influenced more domain investors and entrepreneurs than anyone in the domain industry. Aussie rules or global rules, there is only one Domain King. :-D

We're not measuring one's net worth here, chickenfillet. If that were the case, both Berkens and Schilling would be higher up, as far as I know.

It's more about how much a particular person influenced several generations of domain investors. Attending TRAFFIC 2008 was an eye-opener for me.
