I am registering a domain with an extension that is not for the United States. Two registrars in the country that the domain extension is for say the name is taken. However, moniker.com says the name is available?

Which registrar should I trust? What would happen if I went ahead and registered the name with moniker and it turned out to be unavailable?

Try not to using registrar, but registry whois for your extension.
e.g. for us it is nic.us, for .biz it is whois at neulevel.biz ...etc.

Ditto what bg said. Sometimes that happens among the registrars we know
around here.

Also take note registrars base their results from the Registry of the extension.
So there's also the chance the Registry might have not accurately reported
its results to the querying registrar.
