Personally, I like the name Sav.com the most, but for advertising, Name.com would be best.

The best named register is domain.com followed by name.com. The results of this poll are skewed by the quality of services provided by the two. I haven't even read this thread. Because it's a stupid question.

You put rebel twice, and who was dumb enough to vote for Network Solutions & GoDaddy lmao

My vote goes to Name.com. I think that is a great brand for a registrar.

ABOVE has the best domain.
Best name; but no marketing.
Literally, no one knows they exist.
Case-in-point; Above(.)com is not in this poll.

name.com (y)

porkbun (n)
As far as I'm concerned there are three types of brands.
  1. Category-defining: Notably, domain.com and name.com. People with limited experience will look at these and think of them as "official."
  2. Adequate: Domains like dynadot.com and namecheap.com. They sound professional and are easy to communicate to clients, but their names don't really stand out.
  3. Detrimental: Domains like godaddy.com and porkbun.com. These just sound out of place, and feels like it requires a bit of explanation when you're working with clients. Granted, GoDaddy has somewhat been able to offset their poor choice of brand with its marketing, but it still brings out frown every now and then.
It's important to understand that a brand's primary role is to establish first impressions, and while brands don't go far beyond that, first impressions are important and tend to still stay with us.

And while their brands are great, Domain.com and Name.com are some of the worst registrars out there. PorkBun on the other hand is widely regarded as one of the best.

I agree with your analysis, except Porkbun grows on a lot of people. But i agree, i’ve seen many people comment on it; i’ve seen people post once in NP to comment on Porkbun’s name; only to never post again.

So, Porkbun name many feel strongly about.

It’s not like “Dynadot” is any better- name-wise— and Dynadot is my favorite registrar! Perhaps, if Dynadot got Dyna.com (brokered by Defining)

NameCheap sounds awful.. imo.

I agree with your spot-on analysis, except Porkbun grows on a lot of people.
It has its benefits. It's memorable, and inoffensive (scratch that, vegans and muslims may take offense). But I would not attribute their growth to their brand, but rather the quality of their services.

But i agree, i’ve seen many people comment on it; i’ve seen people post once in NP to comment on Porkbun’s name; only to never post again.
The clients are looking for technical solutions, and while PorkBun is ahead of the curve (e.g. being one out of four registrars that offer integrated security key services for 2FA, etc.) they don't give off that impression.

You'd be surprised with how many people are there are that aren't willing to do in-depth research on which registrar to pick. Marketing is important, and I think branding is one of the more underrated aspects of marketing.

Dynadot sounds technical, dyna being short for dynamic (i.e. dynamic scripts). It's a bit nondescript, sure, but it doesn't sound out of place. Hence it's adequate.

Some might associate the word "cheap" with subpar quality, e.g. "that's a cheap (-looking) car." But I get the impression that this is a vanity-issue that most people don't care about.

As far as I'm concerned, NameCheap connotes competitive prices. Which is a motivating factor for a lot of people. So if you're a GoDaddy-user who's tired of their prices NameCheap is quite eye-catching.
