As far as I'm concerned there are three types of brands.
- Category-defining: Notably, domain.com and name.com. People with limited experience will look at these and think of them as "official."
- Adequate: Domains like dynadot.com and namecheap.com. They sound professional and are easy to communicate to clients, but their names don't really stand out.
- Detrimental: Domains like godaddy.com and porkbun.com. These just sound out of place, and feels like it requires a bit of explanation when you're working with clients. Granted, GoDaddy has somewhat been able to offset the poor choice of brand with its marketing, but it still brings out frown every now and then.
It's important to understand that a brand's primary role is to establish first impressions, and while brands don't go far beyond that, first impressions are important and tend to still stay with us.
While their brands are great, Domain.com and Name.com are some of the worst registrars out there. PorkBun on the other hand is widely regarded as one of the best.
