Which is the better of the two?

I would like your advice please on the following:

I’m looking to purchase a domain name that has 2 words and was wondering which one is better to buy with regards to it being better for SEO.

Is it better to have a hyphen between the two words or is it better to look like one long word? As an example, what is better: www.organic-certification.org or www.organiccertification.org ?

I'm pretty sure the one without the hythen would be better, but why not just buy both variations of the one you want and then redirect the one with the hyphen to the one without?

As far as I'm aware of, SEO wouldn't be that affected by choosing one or the other. What would be affected is type-in traffic.

I'd go with the one without the hyphen, hands down.

Our organisation is trying to attract business globally and although we are located in the UK we are not specific to the UK.

The question i now have is what is better: .org or .org.uk

If .org is better it has already been bought by a competitor. What alternatives would you suggest? If i could have a hyphen between the 2 keywords i have a lot more options but it seems that you all agree that hyphens are not good.

Are you a money making business? If you have a budget for aquiring a domain name I would look into trying to buy a name off of a owner. Not everyone wants $xxxx for there names. I would resgester the best .org name you can come up with now as a back up. Then email some people that have better names and see if they would want to sell it. Also look at websites that sell domain names. .org is easyer for people worldwide to remember the .org.uk

No we are a very small organisation. We do not have a budget for acquiring domain names. The domain name we have in mind is our main keyword. Currently my site is at a domain name which is not a searchable word and i've been advised to move my site over to a domain containing my main keyword.

The .org i can't get, already bought by a competitor. If i use a hyphen between the 2 keyworks i can get the .org, otherwise i will have to suffice with .org.uk

I have bought both but which do u feel is better domain name to host my website for SEO purposes?

.org is better but if you are doing a lot of your business in the uk its good to get the .org.uk also.

As for suggesting alternatives or giving more advice that is hard if we dont know what keywords you were looking at.

if u plan for asia market go for dot asia, ur name should be avai, also very friendly with google and yahoo ....

if org is out, get org.uk as main and work out with dot asia (redirect or link back), tld is always better then cctld (what i learn here) ..

If you want a domain for SEo purposes then the hyphen allows for search engine spiders to easily identify the 2 keywords in your domain (a big plus for SEO). However, users aren't used to typing in hyphens in the URL bar..so I guess its up to you :D

If it's a choice...get both. I would pass on the hyphen as you will certainly give up type-in traffic to the other.

get them both and get as many extensions as you can for your company and have them trademark if your competitor has no trademark on it yet.
this advise is good if you don't have plans to sell them for long term.
the hyphen in seo since you mentioned it, is the spacer of your keywords.
