Why don't you just backorder at the big three and cover your bases?

Snapnames, Pool, and Namejet.

It's too difficult to keep track of who gets what, given that some pendingdelete domains don't even have registration info or are registered through "shell" corporations belonging to registrars.

MelbourneIT prerelease domains => Snapnames

that's not true.

I had a expiring domain that I was after that was with MelbourneIT and SnapNames got it but only after the 'pendingDelete' period was over once the domain became available for registration for everyone. So there's wasn't any special relations between MelbourneIT and SnapNames.

Sorry about that, I should of included where the domains go now. I updated the article.

@Andr3w
If the domain does not have a pre-bid in time, the would go to PendingDelete. Clearly errors can happen and other things... but MelbourneIT expired domain names DO go to SnapNames.

I bid on the domain when it was already in 'redemptionPeriod', 5 days after it entered into this Redemption Period to be more exactly. When should I have bid so that the domain would have gone to SnapNames directly ? Before the 'redemptionPeriod' ?

Yes. You could have had the domain exclusively through Snapnames as a 'prerelease', when it was expired but not sent to redemption yet.
I have secured a Melbourne IT domain through Snapnames no later than a few weeks ago. I assume the agreement is still in place.

I see. So you must bid on it before it goes to 'redemptionPeriod' to have it as a pre-release at SnapNames. Obviously I didn't know this. Nonetheless, SnapNames still did a great job catching the domain for me.

Isn't that true for all domains going into Redemption Period? The existing Registrar no longer has control of that domain at that point. The only thing that can be done with the domain, is that it will drop. Then let the wolves fight it out as to who wins it.

Yes Stub, that's it. When the domain drops, any dropcatcher could get it. While an expired domain is not expired yet technically. It's still under the control of the sponsoring registrar that can reassign the domain to another party. Note that prerelease retain their original creation date in whois, because they did not drop.
