This has fallen to the bottom of the page - I suspect people think you are joking.

I will assume that you are serious. Questioning rather than making assumptions is a good thing.

Yes, poker refers to the card game(s). There are a lot of profitable online gambling websites and poker domains refer to that market.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker

Poker is a popular type of card game in which players bet on the value of the card combination ("hand") in their possession, by placing a bet into a central pot. The winner is the one who holds the hand with the highest value according to an established hand rankings hierarchy, or otherwise the player who remains "in the hand" after all others have folded (the player who makes an un-called bet.).

Poker has many variations, all following a similar pattern of play. Depending on the variant, hands may be formed using cards which are concealed from others, or from a combination of concealed cards and community cards.

Other games that use poker hand rankings may likewise be referred to as "poker." Video poker is a single-player computer game that functions much like a slot machine.

The most common use is for the black wrought iron fireplace poker, thankyou cache, someone who knows what they talking about.

They can be used to stoke or 'poke' at a burning log in a fire place and one can have the enjoyment of watching the sparks fly

Due to the very cold European climate and American winters (Which one could never go without a fire place or a 'poker') this has given the word 'Poker' extreme popularity on our planet and in the online world!

The length of the 'poker' rod also means that one can poke the fire from a distance to prevent the heat causing your cheeks to have a bright red Royal Flush to them

A little history in regards to the American State of 'Texas' on 'Poker'

In Texas they call Poker's 'Holdem's' because they don't like to mince words, you hold a 'poker' with your hand when you stoke the fire right!!! After a while The Texans created some confusion with the 'Holdem' name, they then decided to combine the two words 'Holdem' and 'Poker', thus Texas Holdem Poker was born

When did you last give the fire a poke!

numbers and images too - amazing to think it's all just "ones and zeroes" ... domains are the wonderful intersection of science, poetry, and commerce. And I like poker too ... :)

(The "language science" meme seems to run in my bloodline even - my dad was a cunning linguist turned AI hacker ...)

Did you come up with that inventive explanation for "Texas Holdem" yourself? Brilliant ....

Good to hear, images are great also, very much so... Well as for domains names, they are just plain addictive

RE: Texas Holdem, yes it was an 'all original' post

I am making a poetry website called hiddenpage.com, in around 2 months it will be running, it will be worth a look and will be interactive

Cheers from Josh

The history of Poker is thought to have evolved over more than ten centuries from various games, all involving the basic principals of ranked card or domino combinations and the use of โ€˜bluffingโ€™ to deceive opponents.

One popular belief is that a game similar to poker was first invented by the Chinese sometime before 969 A.D, when The Emperor Mu-tsung is reported to have played "domino cards" with his wife on new years eve.

Egyptians in the 12th & 13th centuries are known to have used a form of playing cards, and in 16th century Persia โ€œGanjifaโ€ or โ€œTreasure Cardsโ€ were used for a variety of betting games. A Ganjifa deck consisted of 96 elaborate cards, often made of paper thin slices of ivory or precious wood. The Persians played โ€œAs Nasโ€ which utilized 25 cards, rounds of betting and hierarchical hand rankings.

A French game named โ€œPoqueโ€ and a German game named โ€œPochenโ€ became very popular in the 17 & 18th centuries, both developed from the 16th century Spanish game called โ€œPrimeroโ€ which involved three cards being dealt to each player. Bluffing, or betting high stakes whilst holding poor cards to deceive opponents, was an integral part of the game. Primero dates back to 1526 and is often referred to as โ€œpokerโ€™s motherโ€ as it is the first confirmed version of a game directly related to modern day poker.

French colonials imported the game to the new world when they arrived in Canada. Their beloved poque was the national card game of France and from the beginning of the 18th century, when a hardy group of French-Canadian settlers founded New Orleans, it spread from the state of Louisiana up the Mississippi river and then throughout the whole country.

In 1834, Jonathan H. Green made one of the earliest written references to poker when in his writing he mentions rules to the "cheating game," being played on Mississippi riverboats. The Cheating Game" quickly began to supplant the popular cardsharp game of 3-card monte on the gambling circuit. Gamers embraced the new game as it was perceived as a more challenging and 'honest' gamble than the notoriously rigged 3-card game. Green took more than a passing interest in the new game and took it upon himself to formally name and document the 'Cheating Game' in his book 'An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling': Poker was born.

I think you guys are just trying to "keyword-stuff" now so the RPC will be through the roof for this thread ;)

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/poker

The only thing I might point out that hasn't been already is wikipedia's handy-dandy disambiguation tool, which suggested something that has already been noted:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireplace_poker

So I guess "firestick" would also work B-)

And I too think the OP was kidding... at least I hope so.
