Hello all,

So what are some realistic expectations for a beginner in this industry? it really seems like the good days have passed. What can the beginner do to make millions in this industry? Is that even realistic? What does the horizon look like going forward for a beginner? I'm trying to set some expectations for myself.

This one piece of advice i can share with any beginner is rather than buying 100's crappy domain , registering them , invest that amount of money in few good quality domain. If you have the resource then buy good quality domains that are under your budget , if not then do spend the little amount that you are willing to put out there. Buy good quality domains and then its up to you what road you wish to take , some say dev. is way to go if you manage small portfolio and good domain. Some say invest into good domain ,look for quick flip and work your way up.

Welcome and good luck , like user above me said look into that section. Dont register domain because you see sales in sedo and other market places and end up saying my domain is similar , why am i not getting such amount for my domain ? well sometimes people get lucky with their sales. First learn more basics about domains, their value, the markets and what kind of domain hold what kind of values. Then you can start buying domains.

I do believe this industry still is a good platform for new players too if you play your cards right.

It's never too late. Opportunities are still there. Tomorrow we will be saying yesterday was the good old days.

Itโ€™s the same as any start up business apart from the cost which is a fraction of most othersโ€ฆ
Also depends are you...

Buying names developing them into sites. (Probably pays off the best if successful but takes the most time)
Buying already registered names to resale them on to end userโ€™s. (this can pay well if you have the contacts)

Setting up affiliates or alike on domains?

Try not to get caught up in(flogging a dead horse) registering the same old names in many obscure ttcld etc e.g. gamblesexcarsfinanceetcetc.whatever unless youโ€™re the first unlikely to make much although we all wish they willโ€ฆ?

There are always new products, inventions, social awareness, trends, fads etc coming along you have just as much chance of registering them as anyone elseโ€ฆ Best advice is research research researchโ€ฆ.

There are always new buzz words being created. Working to anticipate what they might be tomorrow will go a long way towards huge success in this business.

Hi

there's still plenty of opportunity for newcomers, if you follow a path

here a few tips...

get a mentor

someone who can steer you away from the traps of time-wasting tools and resources.

get a budget, know what you can afford to "invest", and have realistic expectations for your roi

stay away from those who spread rumours, doom and gloom

don't believe the hype

be skeptical about everything

read between the lines

and assume nothing

Good Luck

Too true.

Just like if you were to become a property developer today - its a 2000 year old industry, still 10 year back seems like the good old days.

Just be careful what you buy and what you buy it for and you should be fine. The horizon depends on what you have to start w/ in terms of funds as well as information.

take your time with acquisitions and question your purchases, why would a business pay money for this domain? etc... being careful with your purchases combined with actually making some sales here and there and possibly some mistakes will train you as time goes on and you will get better each month, it's not about selling a domain for 1 million it's about selling a $7 domain for $1,000, $2,500, $5,000 $7,500 etc... build your way up as there are only so many domains that would net 1 million, there a quite a few domains that could pull down 1-10k.
