Hi!

I'm about to start a business and undecided about what domain should I choose for an online business:
  • a domain starting by g and being 16 characters long with two full words
  • a 6 characters long domain starting by w that doesn't mean anything by itself, just abbreviations from full words and maybe difficult to pronounce (just because it doesn't mean anything by itself). The good point is that is could be easy to do branding for that name.

Which one would you choose?

it depends of the name

If i had to choose between the two, I'd choose the 16 character long domain. Even though it's too long. The reason is since the 6 characters long domain is an abbreviation that has no meaning and not pronounceable, it might be hard to remember.

It's just that it doesn't have a clear pronunciation but it's actually Vowel+Consonant+Vowel+Consonant+Vowel+Consonant so maybe it's not that bad?

you are making people think to much, you have to be more specific

Neither.

I'd advise you to go back to the drawing board and think of a better alternative to the ones you currently have in mind.

Worst case scenario, put on your thinking cap and create a brandable domain name like the ones that sell for x,xxx on marketplaces like brand-bucket.

This type, but must be soundable.

Agreed. Give us the names for a more accurate opinion,.

get both .. if they are available for reg then it will cost you just $16.. then you can tell us what the domains are.. it will be easy for you to decide after getting professional opinion of experienced members of NamePros.. then you can redirect the 'bad' one to the 'better' one.. nothing to lose. imo

Made me laugh :)

This person needs more than help with their domain naming.
Don't worry, I'm under treatment ;).

"Obviously", I meant C+V+C+V+C+V :-$

@Pcsl - OK. We can guess the kind of domain. This is a made up brandable name. But it doesn't help if we don't know the 2 names, or what business you are in.

It depends on the business

companyname.com that's the best one can ever get

something that can be easily understood
if you say the latter option does not mean anything when you pronounce it
then go with the first option.

This is gonna sound brutal but imho if you have to ask....

I cant understand where does the W came from if the shorter domain is created by abbreviation of those two words and the first word starts with g.
Anyway, let's make an example:
DomainRegistration.com or
DomReg.com
In a general case (including this one) I'd say the two words domain is the best.

Really not enough information in order to make a educated decision. IMHO. We are having to guess too much. You should buy both names, and come back here with the choice of domains. If you want a reasonably educated response.

I have a few businesses and for one I use...

mnm(dot)ca
&
MardianNaturalMedicine(dot)ca

I use the short one for email as in me@mnm(dot)ca and subdomains as in shop.mnm(dot)ca

For a radio advertisement or the back of my car I use
MardianNaturalMedicine(dot)ca

After using them both in business for 12 years, if someone said I could use only one, I would drop mnm(dot)ca

In the end the longer name is more descriptive and works better in google search as well.
It says my business name and what I do.

Don't be afraid of a long name that perfectly describes your business. I have found it to be an invaluable tool. Imagine a portable sign that says fastplum.com or JimsFastPlumbing.com... one says it all, nothing more needs to be said.
