I have unlocked the domain name classicscripts.com in preperation for transfer away from Godaddy.

I have initiated the transfer at my new registrar (Namecheap) and received the email (from transfer-approval.com) to confirm the transfer. I have confirmed the transfer.

A few minutes later I am sent an email from you (Godaddy) telling me the transfer request has been declined.

This has happened to me twice now with the same domain with 3 days! What is going on?

They have 60 days internal policy. If you edit WHOIS you have to wait 60 days inorder to transfer out. Usually this is when you realize why GoDaddy is not good.

But there's a solution. Email [email protected] and personally explain the situation and tell them to remove the 60 day count. They did it for me when I threatened to move hundreds of domains to other registrars after 60 days if they wouldn't turn off the 60 day policy now. And they did. They removed it for the domains I wanted it removed for.

I think your problem is that you recently made some changes in your godaddy account for the domain...

"Last Updated on: 22-Apr-06"

I think godaddy started a new policy that if you make any updates like dns changes the 60 day clock not allowing a transfer starts all over again. There's no good reason for it except that its another way for godaddy to make it hard for you to move your domain away.

Yeah, her name is "Laurie".

They say it is to prevent domains being stolen. But we all know it is all for business, to keep the names with them instead of a different registrar.

That's true, I guess it really is for security purposes and prevention of domains being stolen but I would imagine it being a problem.

I personally don't use GoDaddy, but this 60-day policy is something good to keep in mind.

I think that's a bad guess. Thats what GD will tell you its for... but its not. Think of all the domains that you will be forced to renew with them because 60 days will take you past the expire date. Its just another sc*mbag tactic of good ol GD.

Here is the exchange of emails with Godaddy. Namecheap is my registrar of choice so it appears I don't have enough domains in my account to twist their arm into lifting the limit for this domain! GD is certainly doing itself no favours and I will be avoiding them at all costs in the future.

Hi.

I have a domain (classicscripts.com) in my account (lfcgoals) that I would like to transfer away from Godaddy to my registrar of choice. I am a very infrequent user of Godaddy and as a result was not aware of the 60 day period where by transfers away from Godaddy are not allowed after a customer has edited their whois information.

Please can you remove this restriction for the domain (classicscripts.com) so I can transfer it to another registrar.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Peter Stannard.

Dear Mr. Stannard,

Thank you for the email.

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We have reviewed your account and unfortunately we are unable to meet your request to remove the 60 day hold period for the domain. The domain had changed accounts on March 17, 2006 which will also place a 60 day hold on the domain. As our Domain Transfer Agreement states any registrant information that is modified on a domain will place the 60 day hold on the domain. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this may have caused.

If the office can assist you with further comments or concerns, let us know.

Kindest regards,

Melanie Schmitt

Probably just I can't threaten to move all my domains away from them.

Maybe you should have mentioned that you posted about this on this forum and sent Ms. Schmitt the link. It's sad that you have to point out the bad publicity that something like this can cause to persuade some companies like GoDaddy to do the right thing and accomodate their customers. A better company would want to take care of the customer just because its the right thing to do.

Here are the last couple of emails.

Hi.

Thank you for your reply however the response is certainly not the one I had been looking for.

Is it possible for you to tell me how many days of this bizarre 60 day hold period I have left before I can transfer my domain? And is it possible for me to check this data anywhere in "My Account"?

Thank you.

Peter Stannard.

Dear Peter,

The transfer hold on your domain is on until May 29, 2006. We understand your frustration, and we do apologize for the trouble this may have created for you. We hope this information will be helpful to you.

Please let us know if our office may assist with any additional comments or concerns.

Kindest regards,

I must admit, I'm not an apologist for GoDaddy, but I LIKE this rule. That way if something is stolen from my account, and I'm on top of it, I know I only have to deal with one registrar to get things sorted out, and I won't have to deal with inter-registrar politics to get my domain name back.

It's happened to me at GoDaddy and another registrar (A directi reseller), and the difference in experiences getting the domains back was as different as night and day, because the domain of mine that was with GoDaddy, was still under their control, while the directi one was long gone...

Onto my 3rd rep now. Hopefully Laurie can work some magic.

Dear Mr. Stannard,

Thank you for your email.

In reviewing this issue, we find that the domain went through a change of account on 3/17/06. According to the 'Change of Registrant' legal agreement located at http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/legal_agreements/show_doc.asp?se=+&pageid=DOMAIN_NC
Section 1. Go Daddy's Role In This Transaction
The Current Registrant agrees to release, indemnify and hold Go Daddy harmless for any issues that arise as a result of an improper change of Registrant, whether intentionally or unintentionally initiated, whether by the Current Registrant or others acting on its behalf. The domain name may not be transferred to another registrar within 60 days of the completion of the change of Registrant transaction (the "Transfer Prohibition Period"). In the event the domain name is subject to another change of Registrant within the Transfer Prohibition Period, the 60 day Transfer Prohibition Period will begin again upon completion of the subsequent change of Registrant transaction.
On March 30, 2006 you also completely changed the registrant information.
This would restart the 60 day hold period. Therefore, the transfer away date became 5/29/06.
All legal agreements are located at https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/agreements.asp for your review.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please let us know if we can help you in any other way.

Thank you for your response Laurie. I am not questioning the fact that this policy exists as it is quite clear that it does, but being a very irregular Godaddy user I was totally unaware of this "catch".

If this policy is indeed place to protect domains from being stolen, and not inorder to make it difficult for customers to transfer domains to other registrars, then I feel it would be a nice gesture to waive this hold period for this domain.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Peter Stannard.

They are sure giving you a hard time. Just threaten them to leave the registrar with all your names and that should do it. Show some attitude. Don't be nice to those skanky reps.

I think he said he doesn't have any other domains currently with GoDaddy.
