What is a good base OVT rating?

QUESTION: At what point does OVT search numbers have any "value" in people's minds?

Any? 50? 100? 1000? I know the more, the better but... there MUST be a point where some value is assigned.

QUESTION: Is a domain searched by .ext REALLY mean more than the domain name searched without the .extension... for instance, yahoo versus yahoo.com

I never search a site by extension. NEVER. In fact, I don't think I know anyone that does. Believe me, I've been asking around. LOL!

QUESTION: Are the searches listed on OVT "unique" searches or are they ALL the searches? I mean, if the same guy keeps searching your domain to acess its value, is that artificially driving its searches? Becuase that seems to be an issue with a resource to assign value... everyone uses it to access value and that would, be design, make the implied value inflated and incorrect.

Good questions. I too am curious.

In response to your first question:
I have used OVT to be a factor when I have bought domain names before but as far as I can tell there is no correlation between the values I got on OVT and the actual landings I get on my domain no matter how many OVT results there were.

Anyone tried this exercise with their domain portfolio (putting in overture results for a domain in one column of a spread sheet and actual landings in the next column and doing a formula [=correlation(column1,column2)]?

If I remember correctly from stats class you need at least 40+ samples to be statistically accurate (the more the better of course). No clue if that actually applies to this or not.

I also noted the defference to the OVT results and the results I am seeing on my tracking software for all of my sites. OVT routinely shows 40% - 60% of the results I am seeing on my own software. Keep in mind, my software only tracks a search result when someone actually VISITS the site(s) from the search result. So the actual number of total searches is certainly higher. Even so, the visited search results for gopc.com for last month for instance was 178 searches while OVT only shows 67 (41 gopc and 25 gopc.com).

This may be due to several factors, not the least of which is that the vast majority of the populous searches with Google and OVT results do not incorporate that not the literally 1000s of other search engines out there that link to my site(s). For instance, I get SEPARATE results for Google.fr and Google.au and Google.jp. I get a listing for DMOZ. None of these are factored into OVT.

Yet... despite all of this, OVT is considered so greatly in the value of a domain.

Maybe, it's because it's the most easily available tool in the shed and maybe its because of simple industry branding.

But for those very reasons, it has to be flawed as well... IF it is the premier tool for potential buyers to value a name, they are a great percentage of those looking at the name to see its value. Wouldn't that skew the search results? And the more prominent the site becomes, the more searches for its value.. the skew is scalable.

So... why isn't there a GOOGLE search counter tool available? IF there is, where is is?

It would make sense to compare the two top engines to find a better representation of the searches, wouldn't it?

As for why searching the exact phrase or two words with no space versus with a space is so paramount, I still think that is rediculous. SEO defeats all of that anyway. Only if you are looking for a domain that is an instant million bucks without you having to even submit it or deveolope it, will that ever be a factor. Oh... wait!!! That's exactly what we want... money for nothin' :D LOL!!!

If you find any OVT rating for a .com that isn't registered, I would snatch it up.

I am in the process of regging a couple of highly searched keywords, but in goofy extensions. I'm taking a chance that the domains will even receive any traffic, but I'm going to go for it. The minimum OVT score on these domains I am looking at is about 100,000.

interesting thread and comments,

i can register .com names all day long that have from 500 to 3500 overture search count --- selling them for enough to bother with is another matter indeed

example: "a frame cabin" has a overture search count of 809 and I have it listed at afternic for less than 1800 without offers

maybe i need to cut my prices, where am i missing it
