Here goes. A hypothetical situation.

Say, there's a site xxxxxyyyyy.com (where xxxxx and yyyyy are words).

xxxxx-yyyyy.com is available.

xxxxx-yyyyy.com (with extension) returns some Ovt (40-ish). Apparently, the searches where meant to find someting at yyyyy.com

Question: does it make sense to grab xxxxx-yyyyy.com?

if xxxxx-yyyyy.com is returning OVT with ext, it's a good thing.. I'd take a chance.

Well, I think people are looking for xxxxxyyyyy.com, but type it in with a space (not a hyphen).

Grab?

if you're checking the OVT results and using the hyphen and still getting results with ext, grab it..

By this I mean, checking "xxxxx-yyyyy.com", and not just "xxxxx-yyyyy".

I'm sort of confused with all the xxxx's and yyyy's ... but I'll try to add some thoughts.

Do not grab it if you are talking about a "space", IMHO. It may be worth it if it is EXACTLY "xxxx-yyyy.com" (OVT with extension), but 40 count is not a great number, in my view. Also, do not rely too heavily on these "Overture with extension" figures, in my view ... this is a Search Engine and not an actual browser, afterall.
Can you share more information here (to complement the research above) about the NON hyphenated domain name/site ... is it developed, existing, actual traffic, are there any potential ™ issues with registering this hyphenated version, IYHO?
All the best!

there is definetly value in the hypenated domains. i have a set of 4 at fab. 2 of those have 2 hypens! they get between 4-20 hits/day each and make up to $5 each/day.

it completely depends on the name and quality of traffic.

i can tell u that a 40ish OVT with a hypen or space will probably get u next to nil for traffic IMHO without more specifics.

OK. More specifics:

Nothing is trademarked there, so that's not an issue.

What I'm typing into Overture Keyword Selector: xxxxx-yyyyy.com (with hyphen)

What comes up as a result serch term: xxxxx yyyyy.com (with space)

The particular site I'm playing with is VERY similar to one of my own sites, so these 40 hits would've been right on target.

Again, the situation is hypothetical, just trying to get better understanding of Ovt logic.

Thank you for the thoughts and comments.

I would not register it. Most of the search results will probably be xxxxxx yyyyy.com and not with a hyphen.
