What I DON'T like about various registrars: The list

You see all these threads about "Yeah! I recommend these guys..." or "This registrar is really good" - and once in a while "I hate this registrar because..." but this time, I want to make a list of ALL the things I don't like about all the registrars I've ever used. (I'm feeling kinda cruddy after the ACT today which kind of motivated this negative thread I guess.)

In fact, I don't even think I could recommend ANY registrar (except NP; but I mean ICANN-accredited) to anyone right now.... which is why my recent registrations have been few.

Here's my list, feel free to add on:

GoDaddy - BLOATED site that screws prospective domain owners out of their potential new names... hobbles around the Internet trying to get attention with a model on the homepage which really doesn't serve a purpose anyway. And I think Bob Parsons is a punk. (Who else has a buzz cut and has an ear ring and thinks he's cool and hires models for his business image [what's the POINT of her again?] that owns a domain business?) Often hard to use... slow. :td:


DomainSite - UGLIEST site on the Internet. Have to pay more for what should be standard domain options. Don't try to order more than one domain at a time or it probably won't work. Encounter frequent errors when managing domains. Lame support, IMO. Very very ugly site! Did I say it was ugly? :td:


eNom - I'm not overly satisfied with how they handled the RegisterFly problem... and I don't trust their system. I dunno why, just a weird feeling.

NameCheap - I hate how you have to move funds to a NameCheap account before you can do anything with domains. It's also a reseller, which I don't care for a whole lot (of eNom too... double minus). Interface is too cramped, but I give them kudos for trying... sort of. Lame support as well. Not a reliable registration system from my experiences.


WildWest Domains - GoDaddy... *cough*. Nuff said here too.


I guess that's it...

NamePros - Not enough customers!

I think it all comes down to pros and cons, if the pros outweigh the cons, use the registrar. Thing is, most of it comes down to experience

Agree with the GoDaddy comments, but I can think of 1 thing good about them... Control Panel V4.0 is excellent for managing bulk domains. Pretty much everything else sucks.

I think it all comes down to pros and cons, if the pros outweigh the cons, use the registrar. Thing is, most of it comes down to experience

I only like to use and pay for services and sites that I like using and that work well. When there's cons like this I generally try to avoid.

If that's the only problems you have with Godaddy, they seem the obvious choice. You dont have to have anything to do with Bob Parsons being a 'punk' or the model on the front page.

For me:

eNom - crashed my busiest site (alexa ranking <100,000) by deleting its DNS records, then locking me out from changing the DNS for the domain. Never bothered to reply to my support tickets and e-mails. Never going with them again.

Moniker - quite good, although their control panel seems a bit crappy/cheap (IMHO).

GoDaddy - my favourite. Can get cheap registrations and transfers using coupon codes, and their domain control panel overall seems clear and easy to use.

Godaddy - Inept customer support. They charge you $9.95 if your whois is incorrect. Will lock your name for 60 days every time you change whois. Will deactivate your name if your website content is not to their liking, even if you are hosting elsewhere.

Enom - Crappy/inept support.

Domainsite - Below average customer support. They charge for things that should be included. They charge more for renewal than initial registration.

Registerfly - It's all been said.

What about NetFirms? It's not on your list but I'm pretty happy with them so far. It does take a while for them to verify your purchase before you can make any DNS changes.

Not misinformation, although I should have said that they lock your name for 60 days to prevent transfer away if you edit whois in any way. Push might work, never tried it.

In my case I updated a few names with invalid whois admin contact email to match that of account owner and all other names in the account. Should have been obvious that it's not a hijack attempt by someone but this caused Godaddy to prevent transfer away for 60 days. Complaints fell on deaf ears and all I got was canned replies until I contacted the Office of the president.
Like I said, inept.

The models, edgy videos - all this gives godaddy colorful image.

I don't see anything wrong with GD except that it is risky to hold high value domains with them.

I have found GoDaddy support to be quite helpful and responsive. This is one of the most important factors for me.

Sorry GleenTea. You are misinformed. GoDaddy do not apply the 60 day rule to Admin Info changes. ONLY to Registrant Info changes.
