What Exactly is a 'Mirror Site'?

What Exactly is a 'Mirror Site'? Obviously they are multiple sites that contain the same content, but is it any different that uploading the same files to several domains? Or does a 'mirror site' refer to some system that automatically provide the same content to more than one domain?

A mirror site is one in which that hosts the same content (such as files) to cutdown on bandwidth / cpu processos. THis allows users to select a download, as one micght be faster then others...

I believe There are systems that automatically transfer content, but i have yet to get my hands on one of them.

Very helpful. I know when I am about to download some files, there are different mirrors I have to choose from, located all around the world or just north american.
