What does NIC stand for? Used for?

I've seen it read it somewhere but forgot. Just trying to figure out what NIC means and what it is used for. Please help.

Many/most registry operators can be accessed by www.nic.(tld), and it's easier to remember than how to spell afilias, or neustar and remember what TLD's they manage.
