What would you consider an old domain? a 1993 reg? 1996? 1990?

Also what year was your oldest domain regged and did you reg it...?

I will start..
I would have to say I would consider an OLD domain to be anything 1995 or older, for a dotcom that is pretty old....

I have a 1996 regged dotCOM, I also have a 2001 regged dotBIZ which is pretty old considering sex.biz was regged in 2002....

I regged neither the 1996 domain or the 2001 dotBIZ, both were aftermarket purchases...

Why do people bank so much on how old a domain is?

It's nice to know, I suppose - but I wouldn't look that much into it.

I don't put too much value in the age of a domain name, but anything older than 2000 seems old to me and anything pre 95 would be ancient!

I think my oldest is a 2001 that I picked up last year.

Whatever the technical value, they are easier to sell as some people want them more.

Poets.net -- 1998

Aftermarket.

IMHO, not all old domains are created equal, though, in terms of worth.

I say that because some people like domains, but when they find out it's a relatively recent reg. they slightly frown.

If it's a good name, or one they like, what diff. does the reg. date play into effect?

I agree there isn't an obvious reason I know of why a domain investor would care too much, and an end user who wants a particular name wouldn't care either.

But when I develop a site for resale, old domains make them easier to flip. So the age makes a difference to me as a buyer sometimes.

ABCDE.COM 1995

I have the opportunity to buy a year 1987 domain, but apparently I missed a deal ... dang! :'(

This wasn't intended to be a thread to value any domains. Strictly just discussion about what people feel old is...

Thanks

Google ranks sites higher on age & since they can't tell the age of a website, they make assumptions based on the age of its domain (you can't fake a domain's age). That's why ppl want older domains.

The resale value of domains based on age seems to take off right around late '95 / early '96. I've picked up a bunch of '96 domains into the $10-$50 range but nothing from earlier. I have yet to see a '95 domain sell for under $500.

Some of my 1996-ers:
* TemporarilyYours(.)com
* SoftwareSuperstore(.)com
...amongst others.

I've spoken with a couple of insiders about this. Google does look at whois data but age doesn't serve as much of a virtue in of itself. Google cares much more about:

* How many years into the future a domain is registered (spammy/parked registrants tend to grab their names for one year at a time)
* Continuity of registration: Google imposes a penalty each time a domain changes hands.
* Past usage: Whether the domain represented an active site in past years.

There's very little practical reason to purchase domain "just" because of its whois age, except perhaps as an interesting novelty/keepsake.

I think 1995-1999 - Old domains
1994 and earlier - Ancient

ps. I would pay 5-30$ over base reseller price for old domains.

My oldest domain is 1993. Old to me is 1998 or before, although I don't put much weight in it.
