I have a domain at GoDaddy that I only just found out has expired and a redemption fee of $90 has to be paid to keep it. It is definitely worth more than this, however, this seems a steep amount to pay - is there any other option to save it?!

It seems like this is one of the most evil practices of domain registrars; effectively they are blackmailing your domain because you have no other option but to pay the high fee if you wish to keep the domain.

Nope. You agreed to the terms. I'm a former Godaddy Billing rep. Unless your an executive customer - your stuck at that price.

Although the practice is kind of lame - bare in mind your domain is more than likely 2 weeks past expiration... who's fault is it really?

I was able to do that with one of my names. :] However, I recenlty missed one that got away and it never hit TDNAM >:(

If it is definately worth more than the $90, just suck it up and try to keep a better eye out for your renewals.

Sorry to hear it.
You have to remember that, though you can build and own a site, you're only registering the use of the name for certain periods of time. Just like your car license.
Think of it as a traffic ticket for letting your license expire. Which it did.

Bad luck, yes it is an insane amount they charge and obvioulsy one of the ways they stack up big profits year after year. I would suggest creating a database with expiry dates of all your names and check it daily or make a webpage out of it and use it as your home page like I do.

Thanks for all the replies everyone - rep added. I have decided I will just bite the bullet and pay the redemption fee. Apparently it comes with a year's renewal so that's a bonus! Anyway, lesson learnt and hopefully this will remind you to check your expiry dates!
