Warning about huge price increase Yahoo Domains

A few years ago when Yahoo domains first started offering domain reg services they were charging $1.99 for unlimited .com domains. I picked up a bunch and I've been transferring them out since they suck (they have no push capabilities so to sell a domain registered with Yahoo, you need to transfer it out of there).

Anyway, my reason for this thread is just in case anyone still has domains with Yahoo and hasn't heard about the price increase.

I have 11 left and I'll be transferring them in the next few days to be done with them. I got this email from them:


Dear Alan,

Thanks for using Yahoo! Domains. We’re writing to remind you that it’s time for the annual autorenewal of your service.

Your Domains plan, associated with the domain REMOVED, will renew on 07/20/2008. If your billing information is up-to-date, there’s no need to do a thing (except keep enjoying your service).

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!’s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

Yahoo must be running into some financial situations and want domainers to bail them out. I dont think they should be charging that kind of price just because you registered it at yahoo. To be honest, Yahoo has been going down hill lately. I tried a business hosting account there once and their phone support is impossible to get a hold of. I can remember calling and waiting up to 2 hours to get through to someone just so i could cancel my account. I even told them I wanted an email confirming the cancellation and refund since they were so hard to get a hold of. The girl replied, "absolutely. I will definately send you an email." Did I ever get the email? Nope. Thank god they cancelled the account and refunded me like they promised. I think they are starting to get themselves into trouble and they know it.

I think they figure if clueless small business owners pay $34.95 we'll rip them off. Those who know better good they want to get rid of anyway. That's like going back 10 years. If I remember correctly my first domain purchase back in 1998 or so with Net Sol (only game in town back then) was $35 and they had just "come down" from $50 per year.

Yahoo wants to turn back the clock.

Seems like everything they get into Yahoo ruins. Overture comes to mind. That great keyword research tool that yahoo trashed.

You figure a lot of folks don't read the emails about their domains so you figure most won't even know they'll be bilked until it appears in their credit card statements.

The great thing is...if I go to Yahoo's website, I see a "Domain Names" link, and another link advertising $1.99 domains.

The first link offers domains at $9.95/year
The second link offers $1.99 for the first year, and $12.95 after that

Now, it looks like they have another price which they don't tell you about until after you've purchased your domains?

I like yahoo's free services, but their domain service S-U-X. Be very careful when you transfer out --- make sure to cancel your domains and services at yahoo too, or they will keep charging you for them.

Honestly you can't expect them to provide domains at a loss forever. Now is the time to transfer to a real registrar

If it looks too good to be true, it's probably a scam. You've all just been scammed.
