At Afternic, when I change a BIN price on a domain name in my portfolio, it can take some time for the new price to propagate to all the Afternic partners. Sometimes, it even takes a while for the price to change at Godaddy when you request registering the name. If I'm lowering the price I'm not worried about it, but if I raise it I am.
One time it took two days for the price to fully propagate, and while I can't remember exactly, I believe it took over a day for the price to even change at Godaddy. Granted, this was an anomaly, as Godaddy/Afternic were have some technical issues. But they often have technical issues. Today, I changed a price of a name, and it very quickly changed the price at Godaddy. Good. However, about two hours later, I am still waiting for the price to change at the partner registrars. My understanding is that it is normal to expect it to take 24-48 hours.
It is what it is. But I want to ask a question about how to protect a name from being sold at the lower price after changing it to a higher price, while I am waiting for it to propagate. I'm told that if someone buys the name at a partner before the higher price propagates to that partner, they get the name at that old, lower price.
So how do I protect myself from this happening? DAN had a "Not for sale" checkbox that I could have checked on, but Afternic doesn't have that. Afternic does have a "Hidden" switch I could set to ON, but I'm not sure if that hides the name from the partners, or if it's leftover from when Afternic has a search feature on the site. What does it actually do?
Do I really need to delete the name and then reenter it at a new price? And even if I did, would it actually stop a sale from a partner site for some time?
Why would I even worry about this? Sometimes, some news comes out that will potentially make a name instantly more valuable. Sometimes, I might have someone trying to buy the name, and after a negotiation fails, I decide to raise the price and hope the potential buyer doesn't try to buy the name at a partner at the old price. Or, maybe I simply realize I miskeyed a price and have to correct it immediately (like $888 vs $8,888).
Any thoughts?
