This just in -- .COM & .NET prices to increase in October

VeriSign announced that as of Oct. 15, 2007, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.00 to $6.42 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $3.50 to $3.85. This will be the first registry fee increase for .com and .net since the fee structure was put in place by ICANN in 1999.

Ugh... so lame.

I expect we'll see this across the board on many Top TLD's soon enough .... :(

Automatic increase of 7% on your "Selling" prices to keep up the same ROI ~

I started to consider the large portfolio holders, I figured BuyDomains has approximately 800,000 domain names... I think its a fair assumption that most of them are dot com or dot net....

Imagine what its going to cost them in additional renewal fees this year....

what, $300,000 ?

Hmm..Will this affect renewals as well? If so it's going to be a bite in the ass somewhat for those managing large volumes of domains.

Edit: Justin just posted that :hehe:

I think i can deal with it on a personal basis for the amount of domains i register, however it kicks in down the line when reselling as i doubt resale prices will go up due to this.

But still, 20p, me personally, I am not going to cry i guess.

wouldn't it be worth if we renew the domain up to 10 years before 15 Oct?

Wow they want more money? lol.. What do they do that they even deserve $6.. It doesn't cost $6 a domain to hold whois, and domain data in a database lol.. And it certainly doesn't cost $6.42

Yes, and that is actually what some savvy registrars are suggesting. Most already offer a discount for longer lengths. I know they are out to make a buck, but good account execs recommending this are getting my attention. I am into this for the long haul.

A very successful website would benefit greatly from the longer term simply for the sake of not worrying about it. My sig's site's registration and hosting is paid through 2016.

Who knows what the price will be in 3 or 5 years? Might even be free. So I lose the reg fee for a few years.

I am also considering a few historically good money makers from parking. Again, a 10 year fee is recouped in a month or two. Makes very good sense, glad to see someone else is thinking in those terms, and I say, "why not?"

Perhaps not. But doesn't it cost money to maintain the hardware and software
that's managing the cumulative domain registration data itself?

Of course, one can take it up with VeriSign if they've got a problem with that.

I would agree long term renewals may be a good idea for those domains you know you will be holding onto for that length of time either for personal use or just waiting for ROI, however going off topic (and i apolagise) but just something out of circa1850's post:

My sig's site's registration and hosting is paid through 2016.
I would not recommend entering into a 2 year contract with a host, definately not a 9 year one :o I am tentative enough about 12 month contracts as it is.

But back onto domain prices, i reckon renewing for 5-10 years is a reasonable idea depending on the domain. (obviously not for all you domains, its not cost effective....or smart :hehe:)

"Verisign, the domain name registry that controls the .com domain (as well as .net and others), just notified its registrars (the companies that actually sell domain names to end users) that the wholesale price of .com domains will be raised 7%, from $6/year to $6.42/year. Expect registrars, particularly discount registrars with little margin to play with, to raise their prices by roughly the same amount.

This doesnโ€™t sound like much of an increase, but Verisign now has the right, pursuant to a renegotiated contract with ICANN, to continue to raise wholesale prices 7%/year pretty much indefinitely. And with roughly 65 million .com domain names registered worldwide, Verisign just added $27 million dollars per year to their bottom line"

Also i know ICANN decreased a bit his share from $0.25 to $0.22

Let's see how the registrars will react or if / how they will adjust their prices

hi,

maybe not right in this thread but,

am i right:

If i renewal a domain to for example 5 years,
and then (after 60 days) change register, then the registration would stay for 5 years ?

You are correct sir. Except that you do have to pay for at least one additional year for the transfer.

All I can say is D.N.O.A.

In a business where capitalism and a free market should be the norm we get this kind of monopolistic crap shoved down our collective throats.

Just MHO

I wish I could afford to add 5+ years on each of my 600+ domains but I can't. Reg Fees already seem to crop up and I have to find a thousand here..a thousand there. Then my hosting costs me a couple grand a year too. It's not a huge increase at least. 50 cents more for each .com isn't too bad for most people. So I have to pay about $20 extra per month for my renewals...that's petty cash.
