Actually, phpbb is free, nearly as good and easier to configure (imho)

vBulletin is not free, it's license cost is $160 for a year. If you don't want phpBB then have a look at a few other free ones like SMF and MyBB.

Actually, it's $85 if you buy a leased license, which you have to renew every year. If you go for the owned license, you pay a one-time fee of $160 to run the software forever. However, access to the members area (to download new software) has to be renewed every year at $30 (maybe it's $35, I don't remember) every single year,

Or go for IPB. $70 for one year and you don't have to renew to keep your board running.

If I had a choice for any I would choose Invision. It has the most support for mods and addons. If you can find a version 2.0.0 somewhere on the web you won't have to pay $70 (when version 2.0.0 came out it was free, it's legal...).

Debatable. vBulletin.org has loads of mods and now with the vBulletin 3.5.3 you have to do no file edits which you still have to do with IPB so vBulletin is now very easy to upgrade.

Check out whichBB.org. It's a pretty good resource for bulletin boards.

Yeah IPB is really hard to upgrade and keep your mods. :(

If you don't own any version of IPB pre license it's illegal to run it...there is a free one just like vBulletin, http://www.ovbb.org/ i think is like vb 2.x.x

Ok, I'll have to check on that. Last I heard it was legal, I'd hate to mislead someone.

Go for the new IPB 2.1.5! The liscence is cheaper than that for vBulletin.
