Ok, I think I'm going to make the switch from phpbb to vbulletin. I was thinking of leasing vbulletin for a year, and see how it goes. What makes vbulletin better then phpbb? What extra features does it have?

Yes, converters are available.

All the questions you have asked are answered on the official www.vbulletin.com site.

For one it is a lot more secure :)

There are several major security issues with most versions of phpBB....

Also VBulletin has more, and more stylish mods :tu:

VBulletin is soo much better, if you can afford it! ;)

VBulletin has had security issues recently as well hence why the need for updating to version 3.06.

I should imagine that phpBB is exploited more as I guess it is used alot more and the code is easier to obtain.

v3 is most Professional, Period. If you looking to go the free route or dont have many members, then PhpBB is your solution.

phpBB is the ugliest forum software, all the skins are horrible.

The forum layout itself in phpBB is just very ugly and you need to make a costom skin to get a goodone (and recode the forums abit). vB is more professional, secure, user friendly, easier to mod/skin and etc. ~ Defently change to vB! :)

if you have the money and vision for your forum....go for VB

One important thing to think of when you're considering Vb vs. phpBB is that vBulletin is much more resource hungry than phpBB, and many web hosts does not allow vB on their shared servers since it may/will slow them down..

So it's a good idea to contact your host and ask first, unless you're on a dedicated server.. :)

VB is better, everyone knows that. However is it worth the price? It depends on the size of your forum. In a forum big like this one, definatly it's worth it, in a forum with 200 members, no it's not worth it in my oppnion. The only think I like much more in vB w/mods thats not in phpBB w/mods is the reputation system, and for a small forum it's not worth it.

But like you said it's more user friendly and may attract more people to register. I am also currently going to vb. I just sold a phpbb for $950.00.

vB all the way..I've used both and vB is definately the better one of the two. More secure and more versatile..

I just hope for the buyer that the forum has some traffic :D

I love phpBB. Although I have heard more security-related issues with phpBB, the current version's codebase is supposed to be secure; and when an issue is brought to light, a fix is found much faster because its open source. As pointed out, its being open source means that you can find a lot more hacks and mods available for free. Tweaks are encouraged, and being hands-on is a great way to learn php. With VB, there's a tendency to avoid tweaking (at least for me), since I might break the product I paid for.

I have to disagree. VB releases fixes fast. Also VB will soon be made to hack easier. They are creating MOD support. This way you can upgrade and not lose your MODs.

I no longer allow my customers to install phpBB. Dont need the problems it can cause.

Vbulletin should lower it prices a little. Not to mension this website is ran on vbulletin and look how good it's doing and look at how many people register a day and look how user friendly it is.

Vbulletin baby! :kickass: :hehe:

For me it will be IPB plus vB soon. They are the only 2 forum boards that I like alot. phpBB is a nightmare of problems in my opinion.

And thats VB's fault?

Yes! They own the software they should make it so many people can buy it. Who would not want lower prices? Either they should higer the prices or make them lower. They should raise them so not to many people can have them.

it depends what you need really to be honest

there both pretty nice boards.

both can handle a loads of users
both can let you post topics and replys
both let you send pms
both are modable.
both are mysql powered

if you just want something for your users to post topics, smileys, replies and have signatures, go for phpbb and an easy way to skin

if you want something with fancy dhtml menus, quick reply box, ability to change layout of topics, rate a thread, leave feedback for a user and generally features nobody really cares about. then go for phpbb

theres pros and cons of both
i find phpbb faster
but vb is more secure (but thats partly down to the reason its comercially developed)
phpbb has a less cluttered layout
vb has a nicer administration section
phpbb is easier to skin

Yay.. its a matter of opinion but if I had the money I would go for vbulletin..
although I am not sure why most boards stick with that ugly default vbulletin skin... 80% of vbulletin forums I go to it has the default skin...
lol
