Hi,

Im having a bit of a debate with myself over using a .tv domain for an Online Sports shop idea one of my clients has asked me to research.

Here is situation:
My client wants me to find them the ideal domain for their online High end sporting good store, i've been researching possible names and to me it appears i have 2 options: Buy a .com that is very long and maybe doesnt contain the keywords we want or buy a .tv with 2 ideal keywords.
There is plenty of .tv's i could buy that sound catchy, are memorable and aren't half as long as the .com's but i have concerns which i'd love your views on.

Does the .tv extension suit online shops? Will the public even bother looking at .tv sites when they are looking for goods online?
Will .tv's ever feature anywhere near as high as .com's in search engines? I'm not as SEO guy so i only have small understanding of this field but as far as i know .com's get treated much better by search engines and i havent seen any .tv's feature high for a major keyword.

As you may of guess i prefer buying a really good .tv rather than a poor/average .com.
I hope that in 2,3 yrs then there is many .tv online shops but not plain old boring .com style shops, i imagine shops where you see video clips of items you are browsing while new product demos are streamed into the background...etc
I hope that the public will look at .tv shops when they want a more in depth shopping experience where you can see exactly how your item works & moves before you buy curtesy of video clip demos.

Am i crazy or way off the mark with .tv being ideal for Online Shops??

Please give your views, even if you completely disagree with me (i think sometimes we all agree with each other too much on here)

Thanks in advance

Go for .TV with keywords. Not because I am a .TV enthusiast, but if we explore your situation, it is best to go with .tv. My reasons being: (not in order)

1. For Search Engine results, the extension does NOT matter. What matters is the back links and relevance. I saw .name sites come for some search terms. The reason for .coms normally come at top because, most of the times they are established sites thus gathering more back links and more relevance. Otherwise, the extension bears no effect on the results.

2. Obviously, if you want to go to .com, either buy in secondary market, which could be prohibitively high priced or go for long name with out keywords. Now that is not going to help your Search Engine results. Because, there are no keywords in the name. If does not hurt to have keywords in the name though it is not a must for Google but it is for Msn. Also memorability is good with keywords, imo.

Now, it is assumed that you advertise a bit and expect Search Engines to pick up. If you want to spend few thousands on advertising the name heavily then keywords might not matter that much, but they do matter a bit even in that case.

Obviously, when you use .TV, it caters itself into better shopping experience with a video here and there.

If I were you, I would go with the keywords and .TV

Thanks for replies so far, .tv is definetley the favourite so far with everyone.

My worry though is that .tv will only ever be regarded as an ext for viewing a mix video clips, pictures with some info and not suited to online shops.

Do you believe in maybe 2,3 years time then there will be many .tv online shops out there, will large companies have .tv versions of their stores which give a different level of media content and interaction compared to .com's??

I personally really prefer the .tv route, i have found a number of good keyword domains ranging from reg fee to around $1,000 where as with .com i would need to pay $5,000 min to get a similar level of name.

Though i need to present all the pros and cons of buying each domain so i need to be objective and find out all the facts, so far .tv stands out but i think my client will be wary of buying an extension that she does not know much of or has ever seen a developed .tv store.

Any more views would be greatly appreciated.

P.S: Please excuse my bad spelling, typing and grammar (im tired after a night of listening to my dog barking :'( )

Correct, extension does not matter in SE placement; relevance does. Content, advertising, and category/search relevance does.

Yes and Yes. Today the public associates it with video/youtube/etc. The coming affect is the continuing evolution of video in retail as a source of better informing the consumer of the product quality/detail/use/etc... The last issue of Internet Retailer Mag actually went into depth on this subject.

How many COM's vs. TV's are developed within the search parameters of a specific subject? You see more COM's than anything because there are more com's. Again, it is not the extension that matters, but the content and subject relevance.

NOW, with that said, COM was and still is the choice when it comes to COMMERCE. Your clients budget will dictate the level of category leading name. If they are selling Footballs, then there is no better name then Footballs dot com. Since there is no chance of obtaining that category leading name, maybe that same name in another extension is obtainable. TV does have some opportunity to obtain category leading names AND has a better branding opportunity to create a "Community" that supports the ecommerce efforts.

The number one goal is to create trust with consumers, and with a well rounded approach it is possible with any extension including TV. :imho:
