I saw someone speculate the name is "Kucoin". All the dates line up with the Twitter post.

If that is really the case, the sale is not repeatable and really based more on a famous brand than any generic value.

This is kind of like a situation where a good outcome might not have been achieved by good decisions, but instead a fluke set of circumstances.

This is the classic situation where questionable decisions can still lead to a great outcome. It still doesn’t mean those decisions were great as they are not repeatable and would fail 99.999% of the time. In this situation it worked.

Congrats to the seller, but I don't really take much from outlier sales like this. I am more interested in sales that are more predictable and repeatable.

Looks like a case of squatting if it is Kucoin. Kucoin was founded in 2017 but a bit earlier than the creation date. I think the exchange could have easily won an UDRP since it is pretty much a made up word and only means one thing and one thing alone

When is started domaining in 2020, there was a famous exchange in a very popular ccTLD that dropped and I immediately registered it.

But soon decided that it was not that path I wanted to take and grace deleted it.
Somebody else grabbed it after I deleted and is asking 6 figures lol.
Different risk appetite I guess

There are three possibilities to consider about this:

1- Perhaps the demand for domain names by end users has gone down,

2- Perhaps the demand is still there, but that people are looking to pay a lot less for domains than we are expecting them to considering that they have so many other extensions nowadays to choose from.

3- If you sell most of your domains through the registrars' network streams then where your domains show up when end users search for domains at those registrars can make a huge difference in how many domains you are going to end up selling. There are limited spots in the search results at the registrars and so if you are lucky enough for your domains to show up on the top 5 results then that can help bring you an unusual number of sales without any extra efforts on your part (that is a lot higher than most other sellers). But then if your domains lose their rankings in the registrars' search results then all of a sudden you might see a decrease in the number of your sales. Sometimes the registrars (or registries) pick a lucky domainer or two and give their domains high rankings in their search results for promotional purposes and so those lucky domainers might get a windfall of sales for that period of time. (I wish they pick me someday soon ).

Seems cheap on the surface but you have to realize who the competition is.

The .com owns a major sports stadium, has a deal with F1, they are advertised everywhere. They also have unlimited resources to continue growing.

The only play is to get them to buy the .us for brand protection but they don’t need that now.

Thank you for linking the 272 domains that I listed. I did not link them here because I was unsure of NP's linking rules.

I will continue to add .us sites daily to my section in my for sale thread in the ccTLD section (<350 .us domains for sale). There are so many great live .us websites nowadays that I do not have the time to research and post them all. But I will try, time permitting.

I am amazed and a bit shocked at how many of great .us only websites are really out there. The numbers exceed my wildest expectations. These websites include every imaginable personal and commercial keyword content. Every industry and every person of every walk of life is using them. Seeing these sites is very exciting, especially since they have the TLD of the country with the top economy in the world.

I hope that other domainers take a good look at what is happening with the .us They would be wise to look at the facts now instead of believing in the outdated "the-.us-is-never-going-to-go-anywhere" mode. Remember, there was a time when the .com wasn't worth much and few people cared about it.

Does anyone know of anyone who is hungry and suffering from the economy? Tell them about foodfinder.us. You can find food pantries by doing a zipcode search. Worried about your familiy's safety in your neighborhood and its sketchy residents? One of the sites I listed in my first post was familywatchdog.us, also searchable by zipcode.

Well, I have posted 300 .us sites so far. I'll continue posting new sites daily in my other ccTLD thread.

Just imagine the impact it will have when your potential .us domain buyer gets a reply email from you with the FYI list. They are going to want your domain(s) after clicking on a few sites.

One word of warning, though. Let them know first to look for your reply email because the more links the sender has in an email, the more likely a spam filter will send it to the recipient's spam folder. Ask them to confirm that they got the FYI list.

Has anyone ever had a domain that they let go, even though you had a good idea for it, and someone else picked it up and turned it into a good site?

I owned boardingschool.us and boardingschools.us years ago. I had intended to develop it into a boarding school directory website but dropped the idea and domains. I just ran across it in my search results, so I visited it and wow, did they ever do a great job developing it three years after I had dropped it.
