.US broke the 1 million mark in total registrations April 11, making it one of only six ccTLDs in the world with more than 1 million domains registered. .US is now at 1,000,359 according to DomainTools.com

The others (with their total number of registrations as of March 31, 2006 - according to Denic.de) are Germany's .de (9,720,156), Great Britain's .co.uk (4,783,448), the Netherlands' .nl (1,859,732), Italy's .it (1,112,230) and Belgium's .be (1,028,741).

Belgium is only in the group because they gave away thousands of free registrations earlier this year, so that would leave only 5 members in a ccTLD 1-million club based on paid registrations.

I can only see more good things for .us domains.

Funny to see that it took .us nearly 4 years to achieve the same figures as .eu in just one day :gl:

It's a whole different game today with the increasing focus on country codes and geographical identifiers. If dot us was rolled out tomorrow, I suspect that a million would be achieved in a day as people would register everything in sight as potentially valuable property. Landrushes are all about hype and dreams.

What you see is great hype surrounding dot eu right now. If it doesn't take off with end-user sales, a lot will drop next year. I have been shocked at the low quality of dot eu names I have seen posted on this and other forums as though they were prizes.

Don't get me wrong, I wish everyone well with their dot eu domains and hope that they increase in value over time but honestly I don't know what some people are thinking when I see what they have registered.

You have to look at how much publicity .eu has gotten. The .us extension has been in the .com shadow for awhile. I believe that the success .eu has gotten will help out the .us extension.

I think the huge numbers of .eu regs is also an indicator of how much the industry has grown since .us opened to the public in 2002. .Eu was virgin territory and with more speculators than ever in this field (and all of them looking for a new opportunity), .eu was gobbled up like red meat thrown to a pack of wolves. Time will tell how well the investments pay off.

Incidently, IANA does class .eu as a ccTLD so it too belongs to the 1 million reg club. The figures I cited from Denic were from their last update March 31. .Eu went over 1M on April 7.

That's not exactly accurate. Christ, .eu has been built up and buzzed for practically 4 years. Not quite so for .us. Also, .us didn't have the benefit of a whole lot of other ccTLD sales to help its value whereas .eu can thank ccTLDs like .us, .in, .cn, .es, .cc, .ws, .at, .be, etc, as sales in those extensions help people believe in the worth of .eu names. You could say .us earned the million much like .de, .nl, .be, and .co.uk did. Time will tell if the amount of .eu registrations will be justified by sales of names in the extension.

well concider the fact that their are so many countries that apply to the .eu domain and the .us domain only applys for one.

Well this is good! Seems the .us extension is picking up more speed..

Even if the .us is like the tortoise while the .eu is like the hare, given how the story goes, my money is on the tortoise to ultimately win the race (aka ultimately .us will be the more valuable extension IMO). Imagine how many .eu reg's are hype-driven because of other people registering .eu names and/or saying they'll be worth a lot. .us at least has solid sales up to $xx,xxx to give a good reason to reg them. No doubt that's why I see so many NP'ers in Names wanted asking for ".com or .us only" quite a bit.

Sales in .us are far beyond the sales in .nl, .it, or the other ones. I would much rather invest in .us than .eu as well.

1 million .us are currently registered but how many were regged the first couple years and simply dropped? I also do not believe the success of .eu will be all that great. Obviously there will be some good sales in the field but ultimately I don't see the big deal.

Well, that probably has something to do with how Americans seem inclined towards .com, whereas Europeans seem inclined towards ccTLDs. And now .eu is for all of them.

Undoubtably .be will drop off to well below the 1MM mark unless they decide to extend the free registrations another year or more.
