I am writing another blog and I was hoping to hear from the owners of .tv names.

For those who are developers, how did you get started and what were the biggest challenges?

For those who are not developers, what is holding you back from developing? Do you feel that it is too daunting to navigate the development channels? Is it a lack of time or money?

Thank you for your input.

For me it is time........money would be nice, but just getting a site up and running doesn't cost anything but time, assuming you already have your own web space.

Money will help in the long run to get professional videos done, but I have enough hack design skill to get the gist of what I want up and running.

So yeah, time is something I simply don't have in abundance for development. Maybe 1 to 2 hours a day at max.

i do not want a me.tv site since putting weirdo.tv on there- and i do not want to pull other videos like youtube-

if it is gonna rock, it needs to be original-
hence- my issue is, i have no idea to take from the video camera, load it up, get it on the site, ect....

and no time to learn right now-

my stuff is gonna be my stuff, not what the world can see all over the place-

that is just me and what is holding me up

Gonna use me.tv tools and mix with original when i can. Both can work together IMO.

Believe it or not, that is a strategy in itself.

Actually what I meant was that nothing is holding me back, I am full steam ahead and hope to be able to reveal to evryone - wait for it - a DECENT, FULLY DEVELOPED, INTERACTIVE, MONETISED, GOOD LOOKING WEB 2.0/3.0
SITE in about two months time...

Bold statement and I stand by it (well actually below it..bt you get my drift!)

I would say the most challenging aspects of launching a .TV have been finding an affordable script that stands out and offers features that are not common.

For instance, if I am going to tout a new way to do the internet (media/video heavy), I need something that is going to be different. And again, once you do something new, it takes people a while to catch on.

The other thing is that although video has jumped in the last couple of years due to YoutTube, etc., the mass population isn't video savvy enough to put up original content. Even if they understand what they are supposed to do, they don't know how to hook their videocamera up to the computer and dump some video onto the internet. With the emphasis on webcams, the learning curve on this problem should be dulled. But the internet culture has to grow through this awkward media-adolecent stage. Going from reading, to watching, to contributing.

Not sure if that helps, but those have been my main struggles.

David,

Very good points raised.....one way to solve the adolescent stage we are in is to offer inducements - in whatever method you think of that will work best - for user contribution to make any meaningful impact and yes, the site must be original - the trick is getting the cost down.......and thinking outside the box.....

Maybe this should be another tread... but give me some examples of inducements?

David, one of the biggest problems with scripts is that they are unique for about 2.5 seconds before someone clones the crap out of it.

And the same is said for unique designs as well. They can be cloned. The way around that is to be the first, build quickly and get a core group of users. Any other site will be using a clone version of you, only not as good, or as popular.

Unfortunately I don't have the money to get a custom site built, nor the know-how to build it myself.

I will say that the media script I am purchased for www.BANDchannel.TV from EntertainmentScripts has a profile editor that MySpace is testing in Beta.

So you are right. It is an ever-changing landscape. I just want to have a usable product that I can grow with. (I think I have found one.) But without capital, I can't run 10 .TV's at a time out of the box. I don't care about having the shiniest. Just being able to work a niche is great for me.

I have 3-5 that I would develop right now if I had about $500 per for development.

I hope I am making sense. LOL.

For me its money and I don't have the know how to do it. I want a fully customized flash site with all the bells and whistles. But until I get the cash to build out the 3-4 .tv's I have in mind i've been actually submitting my me.tv sites to SE's and directories to get them listed and with the way me.tv sites are all linked together in do time google will get to love me.tv. I would suggest others do the same with their me.tv sites because development or not it takes time to get indexed and get inbound links coming to your domain why not start now so when you do get around to developing you have some built in traffic to work with.

p.s isn't a domain with traffic worth more than one without ?

As a video guy I came into this because I had been trying to convince real-esate agents to move to video; that wanted nothing to hear about it even though I could produce a 3 min narreted video with back ground music converted into flash for 50 bucks more than then a 360 virtual tour, So I started forsalecallowner.com made some yard signs and videotaped homes & property on my own, this went along good for a while, but scince Ive seen the .tv generation come-about , ive decided to invest cash into developing FSCO.tv that will be an independent property marketing portal with only video of homes for sale by owner. It will be a very simple , eye please "PORTAL" upon completion in januray of 2008 when the new the moon goes into caparicorn.

I will offer forsalecallowner.com yard signs but forsalecallowner.com it self will be direct to FSCO.TV. and will advertise both forsalecallowner.com & FSCO.TV.

I will also Like to develope forsalecallownertelevison.tv as a live stream of 100 homes a months with commercials, kind a like a tv staion. ( Any Takers )

As far as importanting youtube content, I have no objection to this, it can be a more pleasent veiwing experice for a piticular nitch useres and could offer more content to a pitcular subject than your average youtube search page with some ringtones for sale.

Im considering doing this to a few site I have, to promate and cross advertise. Plus I just dont want to sit on my dottv's they need to be out there. some one should develope a dot.tv search engine only I have a great doamin for it, ollo.tv..

Im also in negtianaions with a music industry cats people in regards to doing a full blown / TV campaign loading the site with this cats vidz and uploads of fans video phone footages from concerts & stuff like that " You Know Dot Tv stuff " Video Video Video I work for this guy part time as a video guy.

Whats great is there are videographers across the country that will shoot-edit and upload for 149 bucks, its getten cheap. http://wellcomemat.com

Also the germans are buying up .tv to go to hell, I cant find any good german tv's anymore, all the high profiles and celebs are all taken and I beleive them to be as we speake buying american stars, a freind of mine over ther has spent 50 grand so far.....which could prove fatal to any of celebs in the future.

I like the fact .tv is universal and works in most languges, i for see the extintion of cablal tv alltogether and dottv providing a world wide forum for any digital media video experince and am litterly betting all I got on it.

Thank you sinking islands out there in the pacific ocean some where.

If you are a webmaster or even a weekend warrior, it is just too time consuming. I have 2 personal sites that I have to update, plus monitoring 450 names (which I am proud to say I have reduced from 650!) Monitoring 3 forums with sales threads. At least 4 parking sites. Then tending to my career; setting up photoshoots is a full time job all on its own. Conceptualizing a design and concept is hard enough, then you have to coordinate 2 assistants, make-up artists, hair stylists, locations, and a few brain dead models over the phone and email is a nightmare. Then you actually have to cater to these people and their demands while maintaining calm and a happy face during the shoot. Did I also mention I do web design on occasion if the price is right? I have a major project that is finally coming together after 1 and a half years of photography and web design? I spend about 2-3 hours a day designing peoples websites if they also hire me to do the photography for the site as well. Only one problem, I hate doing web design for other follks. If there were 48 hours in a day I would be extremely happy. I am the kind of person who will work for 15 hours straight just to accomplish the task at hand so I can relax the next day, go to the gym, or surf. Let my brain off for the entire day... Well that almost never happens, I can't let the domaining go even on my days off. For me the me.tv sites are a godsend. I can put up a site, Design up a great banner in 1 hour, make it look almost legit: www.pikespeak.tv then add a few videos, get PR, backlinks, traffic, and eventually revenue. Maybe even a few folks will sign-up and post their own videos from their run at Pike Peak. Then sell the name for a nice profit and re-invest. IMO I have only one name I would Develop at the moment: StockPhotography.TV - I would pick up a nice script and tweak it, and actually supply stock photos. Currently funding is holding me back. I live month to month, one month riding high as the sky, the next, broke as a joke scrounging for chump change! Such is the life of a photographer and other artists living where they want to as supposed to where they should. With this I am going to leave for the day and go SURF!

I would say whats holding me back is motivation, i am semi-retired at age of 25!!! :hehe:

I dont badly need the income right now and so havent really done much but surf web, research ideas. design plans....etc Now its getting to the time i need to start putting everything together and working again but im a bit too used to relaxing after months of doing little work wise.

Oh and i should also say im disabled with severe spinal injuries & chronic pain :( Thats not my excuse for being lazy lately as there is no valid excuse but the pain killers slow me down and make it hard to focus & keep active. Oxycontin & hard work dont really go hand in hand but i LOVE money so need to get earning again. :$:

Apart from personal reasons the thing that has held me back from developing my .tv's is the high cost of getting original Videos made. I had set myself an approx budget in my original business plan for Videos on my lates development before i spoke to the Video companies and that was a BIG error. I wanted about 5 minutes of Video (maybe 15 short videos) with no fancy effects or any crazy ideas, when i Emailed local companies for a rough price then i was shocked to get told between ยฃ500 - ยฃ1000 per 1 minute of Video!!! I was in touch with over 5 companies and all spoke of the same type of figures so my business plan was in tatters as i was needing new Videos monthly.

In the end i put an ad in a Student Classifieds and have came to an agreement with a young film maker to do a series of Videos for a much better price but in my view its still far too much in order for me to contemplate producing lots of original Videos.

So for me the major thing holding me back is the high cost of Video production (and pain killer addiction!)

One more thing i have found a challenge is that hardly anyone outside the domainers, designers field knows anything about .tv so isnt thinking in same way as us. Every person i explain development plans to ask me "but what is .tv" A large scale Tv Ad compaign explaining/selling .tv's to everyday internet users would help massively but i doubt it will happen now.

Thats my side of things, mixed up, confused & full of spelling errors as usual no doubt but im sure you all get my drift.

I look forward to latest Blog :)

I see myself as a retailer of domain names and websites.

I don't want to run a media company or be a publisher. If it turns out that's my only future option, I'll leave the business.

Everyone says "develop! develop! develop!" and I like the idea of improving my domains to make them more desirable products. For me that can include getting references and links to them on other websites and adding software infrastructure to the domain. But producing content is taking it too far. What fortune 500 company would want to buy any media I could create without my developing a business plan for each site?

I want to enhance my domains as products, not run 1000 tiny businesses. That's asinine.

If I have to take the risk and effort of starting a business just to churn out a product, why, that's crazy talk!
