Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe my ideas for promotion were too grandiose. Maybe I saw a marketing diamond in the rough where there is only sand.

But could anyone with the available opportunity and resources held by Demand Media have done less with the .TV franchise over te course of 2007. Certainly one of the great hype jobs of all time. I feel like a fool having encouraged the people around me to see what DM was going to do for the .TV extension.

I suppose the crew at DM supported their 'ChannelMe' platform well enough. But if the idea was to spur growth through promotion and marketing, I believe this forum has done more for the extension than DM ever did.

Am I alone in this assessment? Could anyone have done a better job of not improving the .TV profile on the internet radar?

On the flip side, we saw .TV's fly off the shelf during the GD sales. And .TV made itself known several times on DNJournal.com with some respectable aftermarket sales.

This forum has brought some good discussion to the landscape.

What are the 3 best things that happened to .TV in 2007?
What are the 3 worst things that happened?

(Will save my 3 for later in the discussion.)

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

My three best are:

1. Premium names released again.
2. News.tv sold.
3. Sahar (big .com investor) positive about .tv.

My three worst are:

1. Premium names for sale that should be non-premium (we all know which ones).
2. Besides ahead.tv, no clear DM or Enom tool to check premium prices.
3. Sedo and Afternic still not having .tv on their home auction page.

I think you are right David that Demand Media did not promote how most thought they would promote .tv.

I think many thought they would market .tv the way Godaddy markets. Truth is they were never going to do that and should have at least communicated that.

When I spoke to someone at ENOM, Ms.Flores stated "We only have seven sales people in here where Godaddy has thousands, we have engineers we want to give our resellers the best tools and let them sell the domains."

Now .tv is one small component of Demand Media, they have many things going on. When I asked do you think Channel Me was a failure ? Enom said No we think it has been a success. So there is a disconnect between Demand Media and .tv portfolio owners IMO.

I think three of the most positive things I saw this year were:

1. The launch of Mercedes-Benz.tv. Whereas a lot of big players are committed completely to the dot com site and use the TV equivalent as an adjunct, Mercedes-Benz showed how the extension can be used as a showcase for premium content. Their international fashion show gets a lot of attention and to see it you have to go to the TV site, not the dot com site. A lot of video content on new car models will make this site a must and should help drive dot TV in 2008. Monkey see, monkey do and when the other car makers get around to seeing how MB has used the TV domain they may well follow suit. A very positive commitment by the big car maker to the dot TV domain.

2. I liked the way the way the Meredith Corporation, the publisher of the US household media brands "Better Homes and Gardens", "Family Circle" and "Parents", are moving into the dot TV space with channels Better.tv and Parents.tv. These are the type of content players we need for dot TV to make the big leap forward.

3. I saw a lot of very professionally created TV sites come into being this year .(Who knows, maybe they were around earlier but I only noticed them this year.) Channels of the ilk of Hair.tv, Boston.tv, BetterMeals.tv and LonelyPlanet.tv. I personally think to get the likes of Lonely Planet across to dot TV is a big win. They are progressive thinkers and usually ahead of the pack, so for them to move into .TV now says a lot to me. I've tried to feature these sites on one of my dot com domains - www.bestchannels.com. In 2008 I hope to be able to add more great channels like these. I believe we all need to find ways in which we can promote dot TV and if you have a dot com site not being used, and which gets a bit of traffic, why not point it to TV sites that have merit :)

Three bad things?

1. Would have to be the relaunch of dot TV. That was a big disappointment for me. I think it was very badly done, in lots of ways, and I agree with ownthisdomainnow about the hype.

2. ChannelMe's tools for building your own .TV channel. A great idea to create tools for people but I'm of the view that if you do this you should do it properly. The "tools" are no more than a grab facility for ripping videos off YouTube and its peers. The graphical design created by the ChannelMe tools is poor and almost infantile. If I see one more chunky ChannelMe channel I'll go bananas! They haven't put much time and effort into this otherwise there would be more provision for people to create channels that look different to the thousands of other ChannelMe sites that now plaguw the .TV space. Yuk!

3. The third biggest disappoint is that the people who are driving the dot TV tld don't appear to be listening to the people who buy and hold TV names (or at least I don't think they are).

On that note, merry Christmas to everyone in the .TV forum and I hope 2008 sees dot TV start to get the recognition and attention it deserves.

The best part

1. Justin.tv is the poster child of .tv and very well managed with only a seed capital investment vs over 300 million bucks. Hmm. That explains that co.

2. The great developments we are seeing from national to Cleveland.tv. 08 will be even better and more projects off the ground

3. The sales growth in .tv and .tv hitting weekly charts. Will only continue upward.

4. Had to add a 4th, news.tv being sold and TNT.tv being branded very well.

The worries I have

1. Verisign factors and the .tv pricing and how they are promoting teen age porn and trademarked names. Its not right and makes us all look bad for the image of .tv domains. Like Kevin ham, and his .cm play and shaddy deals in this.

2. Not having a dedicated auction for .tv yet

3. The wild and crazy price movements for registration in .tv domains. One month its 9.99 the next month 38.99

Merry Christmas everyone and happy holidays

Ownthisdomainnow I have been trying to tell people that .TV is not something that is going to blow out in 2007 and some people got mad and started to post bad things about me. Well it is ok sins what I was and am telling is ending up the truth.
And other thing don’t be down .TV is a great long term investment and the only way it will be successful if all of the .TV domain owners will build build build and then people will see unbelievable .TV websites and stay on them, so cheer up and have a great Christmas and New Year.
