The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I have also experienced this problem. I think its partly done to Google seeing the .tv extension as though of Tuvala, and not a top level extension like .com, net etc.

Which Google are you using to do your searches ??
What are the main extensions that are appearing in the results ??

Ranking on google depends on the keyword, how competitive it is and the type and amount of SEO done.

For some non-competitive names, I've been able to get them near top on Google search engine with some SEO work.

This is the #1 issue with .TV. All the energy being spent blaming Demand Media for the Channel Me product should be directed at Demand Media to speak with Google to get the search engine to recognize .TV as a gTLD like .com, .net, or .org.

i am not knocking tv...i just think its a little odd#but i will have to stop developing dot tv till this is sorted out

I'm not kocking TV either - great, great brand

but if I develop a kick butt .TV site and Google doesn't give me a whiff, then I have to consider that in my development plans.

I hate to use Tier2.com names, but if I can get some placement on Google with IWISHTHISWASDISCJOCKEYSTV.COM and I can't with DISCJOCKEYS.TV - then this is an issue.

Seriously, folks should be screaming to the top of their lungs about this issue. This is the #1 threat to the extension. End users won't develop if they feel Google won't recognize their sites in the same veign as .NET, .ORG, and .COM.

I mean I have friends developing .ORG because they can get SEO benefit over .TV for video sites. .ORG - I hate .ORG. But I can't ignore the Google issue.

No amount of SEO voodoo can guarantee better site placement.

Google placement depends HEAVILY on site "quality". Build it and they will come. If you create a site with fresh, useful, targeted content, you'll get repeat visitors and increased search placement even with a .TV.

Ustream.tv is at the top of Google's list for such terms as "lifecaster" and "stream tv".

Not with .TV domains unless you are targeting keywords that get little or no search volume. It is easier to get good SEO with a .COM, .NET, or .ORG on Google.

Actually Google rank depends heavily on another factor - where we rank very strong. Not strong enough to get the .TV domains out of the ccTLD sandbox. I agree repeat users will help, but it is difficult to get repeat users. Most internet sites are one and done.

It would appear that Google does penalize many if not most .TV sites but I don't think this has been officially confirmed. They also penalize parked pages hosted by mainstream parking companies using some sort of DNS detection.

Hopefully, this will change as the number of quality .TV sites increases. Ustream is one of the few .TV sites that is taken seriously. I can't wait for more.

It does appear .TV domains rank very well for search terms ending in "TV". DiscJockeys.TV is #1 for "Disc Jockeys TV", ReceptionHalls.TV for "Reception Halls TV", PestControl.TV is first page for "Pest Control TV". Several others on the board have referenced search terms ending in TV where a .TV is #1.

We either need for more quality sites (supply) or searches for TV related keywords (demand)

George: How big a problem is this?
Are we talking about you getting 1,2% less traffic to your .Tv's or is it a massive difference??

Hull's: What domains are you having a problem with, maybe i can look and see if there is anything needing done to get you better Search Engine Placement.

I own & run a Niche .TV and i've found it great for getting Search Engine Placement but obviously there is less competition for niche terms so its difficult to compare.

At 1st glance i'd say you need to do some SEO work.
Add a Title to each page & Meta Tags
Try and get some backlinks (not sure if you done this yet, just general advice)

None of my Geo's are fully developed but Scotland.tv (only part finished site) does get traffic, in particular on subjects that have slightly less competition.
For example, My Aberdeen Hotels page gets 3,4 unqies a day & i'd say this was down the all the time i spent sorting out the keywords , meta tags & Page Descriptions.
Before any of this was done then it got no traffic at all.

I'm no SEO expert but even at my novice level i can see how big a difference all this makes.

Obviously George's .TV traffic problems are not down to the same reason as George knows 10x more about SEO & keywords than i do.

Well Ronnie, alot of it optical in the sales process. For example, many photographers will search for "photographers" or "dallas photographers" and see who are the top 3 sites for those keywords. If your site is in the top 3, they will signup or contact you to pay. We use our top placement for many keywords in the sales process when speaking with advertisers. The most oft asked question is "why should I advertise on your site". It is very powerful to say "We are #1 on Google for the search term directly related to your business".

IMHO the big thing is end user sales and .TV. A large corporation is not going to allow SEO to deter them from buying .TV domains. The problem is the tier 2 and tier 3 players like myself who depend on SEO to build their business. If the directory providers or niche content players feel like .TV domains won't rank well under the .TV banner, then they are going to purchase .NET and .ORG domains.

If that happens, it would be akin to a country with large corporations, but no small businesses. While large businesses are key, the small business is the backbone of most economies.

That is my opinion FWIW.

BobParsons.TV
First page and first in rank for the terms "Bob Parsons" in Google.

I think Google's algorithms are very sophisticated.
If you have the relevant and quality contents with good number of backlinks, you'll probably rank well.
I've been reading a lot of threads on DP and SEO forums in regards to this, but many people are saying that TLDs do not really matter. It's just the quality contents, updates, backlinks, specifying target areas in google webmaster tools, links from location specific sites, which country your web hosting server belongs, etc.

I guess another way to test it is by purchasing a random, unknown and unused name

hgeriugh8924y5983yqhfieqhgihtiojq1rowbhw9ry1894g in .com, .net, .org, .in, .tv, .mobi, etc and see how they rank... tweak the development, backlinks, etc
