Kyle Tully posted on X that he paid $140 to transfer his .ai domain name to Spaceship. The name moved over, he paid $140 but even though the checkout showed (including one year renewal). Spaceship replied Hey there! We use this template for all transfers, regardless …

Everything about the .ai registry is seeming like a cash grab. Huge registrations/renewals with a mandatory 2 years, no years added for transfers and run by one guy who makes the rules up as he goes.

Imagine you own a small island, and suddenly it becomes the hottest vacation spot. This island, once known only for its annual coconut festival and the legendary “Crab Racing Championships”, is now swarming with domain investors, all eager to stake their .ai claim.

Yes I agree that it's a cash grab.

It's kind of funny that Anguilla basically fell ass backwards into a windfall for their domain extension, then proceeds to be nothing but greedy.

The registration, renewal, transfer fees and policies are ridiculous.

Not that I support what the .AI registry is doing, but wouldn't devils advoCate argue they are just maximizing their profits (and subsequently raising Anguilla GDP) because the market interest is strong enough to support it?

If market (domainer) interest dies, then maybe the registry will think twice about its policies. But for now, why would .AI do away with this cash grab (if legal) just because some domainers are not happy with their abnormal policies?

It seems like it's a .ai thing.

Do you recall .TV do anything greedy or strange when they fell into their windfall?

The junk drop is going to be epic, especially when you factor in the extremely high carrying costs.
Some of the brightest and most innovative AI companies have been investing in the island’s future, albeit indirectly. Hopefully, sustainable solutions have been developed to protect the island from a potential decline in living standards when .ai renewals and their associated revenue streams will start to rapidly decline.

Interestingly, Anguilla is home to the endangered Lesser Antillean iguana, which has a unique way of protecting itself: it can detach its tail to escape predators. So, while the island works on sustainable solutions, its wildlife has some clever tricks up their sleeves too.

They can do whatever they want. They are riding the hype train now.

As consumers get sick of "AI" or the term just becomes superfluous, we will see what happens.

At the same time some transfer BS where you have to pay fees and not get an extra year renewal...What are you paying for exactly?

I think that applies to a lot of lizards. In Florida, anoles, geckos, skinks, etc. all do that. Just saying :)

I think you're paying for services that were only 50% rendered. Hopefully, registers make it a little more transparent about renewal not included in .ai transfer or better yet they start adding years. Brad what is the wholesale pricey the registry is charging them for .ai?

.ai registry needs to change this ASAP. What are you paying 2 year renewal for if the domain doesn't get renewed when transferred?

Spaceship needs to fix the template.

As is, it's false advertising. (including 1 year renewal).

No little buried disclaimer changes that fact.

There are some ccTLD's which has such feature by default, no renewal after transfer.
I had such with some (.ro) domains, at least now I can renew them cheaper, under 10$ not 14€ at it's default (rotld,ro) registry.
For (.ai) it's a shame to ask so much, just for a transfer away.

Has Spaceship already updated the misleading text now that they've been made aware of it?

They have this on transfer submit page in small grey font:
  • After transfer completion, a 1-year renewal will be added to the top-level domains (TLDs) that are mandated by ICANN or the corresponding registry to be renewed. .ai, .uk, .co.uk, .me.uk, and .org.uk TLDs will not be renewed.
  • The .ai registry charges a $140 fee for all .ai transfers. This fee is not imposed by Spaceship and is mandatory by the registry. It will be listed as the price, at the time of placing a transfer order.

Thanks @silentg. Now it only has to be prominently mentioned during checkout.

I like NameCheap and Dynadot because their CEOs get involved and fix issues.

Spaceship and namecheap are same company. I would think responses are about the same. However, each has his own experience. Spaceship is new and a few bugs but overall, many domainers have flocked to it.
