Kyle Tully posted on X that he paid $140 to transfer his .ai domain name to Spaceship. The name moved over, he paid $140 but even though the checkout showed (including one year renewal). Spaceship replied Hey there! We use this template for all transfers, regardless …

Richard and Todd (Dynadot) are helping Ai registry and the country. And Vince is shooting himself in the foot.

He forgets how big NameCheap is.

Vince responded with a quote of the request from a Namecheap employee tho, and he acquiescenced there was nothing there in the ask about including renewals...

I think if that's how he wants to run it so be it why can't we respect that? Every registrar should know the rules before they present them to their customers.

I guess he can run it how he wants, no matter how outside standard practice the policies and technology are.

If the territory wants him to run it that like, more power to them.

At the same time, the extension belongs to them not some dude. So, if they think the extension should join the modern world, then they might want to consider their options.

It's really not anything he did to make the extension popular. It just became popular because of the "AI" technology trend.

It's riding a wave now, but eventually anti-registrant polices and unsophisticated systems and processes are going to have some negative impact.

He's running it, basically holding the reigns. For sure it became popular because of the ai trend, the extension is a literal match. I think the negative impact has to do with what we're used to, not anti-registrant policies or processes, systems etc.

What policy dictates what Vince has to or not? This is a ccTLD they can have their own rules.

Personally I would consider adjusting to governance while not expecting a conformance to a set of rules that doesn't apply to that extension. There were reasons given by the registrar manager as to why he does what he does. It all still comes down to doing your own research at the source.

I think with the amount of feedback and backlash Vince will likely take a second look and adjust accordingly particularly because a registry need renewals for sustainability.

What's the risk/reward for .AI to drop the transfer fee?

Removing fee
Risk
: losing $millions
Reward: Making domain investors + registrants happy.

Keeping Fee
Risk
: Making domain investors + registrants unhappy
Reward: making $millions

Will the transfer fee cause investors/registrants to register/renew less names?

So far (even with the transfer policy) the .AI demand is still trending up...

Is the incentive to remove the transfer fee before it's too late and the transfer fee kills the .AI hype?

If a transfer fee is a catalyst to killing .AI hype, then shouldn't .AI investors have greater concerns...

When is it economical for a registry to enact premium renewal fees after the TLD starts making traction such as .TV?

It would be interesting to study the economics of previous hyped ccTLDs such as .TV and .Me. At which point do reg/renewal/transfer fee's become too high, too low, or just right for demand/proift growth?

https://www.namepros.com/threads/what-are-premium-renewal-fees-for-tv-names.301390/#post-1806213

Would .AI registry enacting premium renewal fee's be a greater catalyst to killing .AI hype than transfer fee's?

Or would premium renewal fee's bring the .AI registry more profit than transfer fee's?

It would be interesting to see an economist break down the different ways/price points the .AI registry can be profiting from in comparison to how other tlds operate(d) their policies/price points.
