Hey! It's this week's Top Topics review at NamePros! B-)

Leaving domain life; My plan for Afternic; How can I make my first domain sale? Defining "wholesale price;" Dot .ai transfers aren't getting an extra year added.

Leaving domain life?
After several months in operation, a domain investor is calling it quits. The lack of sales can be frustrating and it often leads to ending one's venture with domain name investing. What would you do in this case?

My plan for Afternic
A domainer isn't happy with how GoDaddy is monopolizing the domain industry. By voting with his feet, he's letting Afternic know that it's not the only player in town. Join the conversation to share your opinion and actions in a world that needs more choices.

How can I make my first sale in the field?
This is another case where a lack of sales are almost driving a domain investor out of the industry; he could use the advise, intuition, and support of fellow domainers so join the conversation!

What is your definition of a wholesale price?
This discussion is about what can be defined as "wholesale price" for domains that are sold to other investors, for the most part. Unlike "end-user price" there's seems to be a lack of a formula to deduce it. Or is there? Share your feedback, it's important!

Transferring a .ai? You are not getting any years added
Despite costing $140 on average to transfer a .ai domain from one registrar to another, the process does not add an extra year. Surprised? It's actually the case with many ccTLDs that separate the renewal and the transfer processes. But is the cost justified?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The ai transfer complaint thread is interesting because it reflects many registrants who were given the false impression from the the registrars that they would get years added which is the norm from other TLDs. Seems the registrars didn't do their due diligence and simply provided a "blanket banner".

The official FAQ from the dot-ai registry doesn't actually provide any sort of renewal clarification upon years added with transfers:
http://whois.ai/faq.html

which is unfortunate at the same time if your a professional entity never take anything on assumption always get the facts, by reaching out the the registry owner.

The registry owner for dot-ai responded on an X thread that the fee is actually goes towards advertising costs for registries as well as for helping the gov of Anguilla make money:

which is all fine and dandy except for the fact that this info was given on after the fact. So now that we know, and coupled with a ccTLD that may already be in danger of massive drops due to many norm investing trends where only the strongest survive particularly in special niches, it should be a lesson to research and vigilance with anything that isn't strongly regulated and based on pure excitement rather than taking it for granted.

On the positive side, maybe the attention will bring change to the transfer/renewal format with dot-ai.
