Okay, this is going to be complicated.

Of course we know that some of you are Epikoholics. Being addicted to Epik is perfectly normal. Unlike the crazy learning curve, and constant frustration with their code, server speeds, constant errors, and especially Epik's geeky approach to their so-called simplicity.

We don't want to criticize Epik again. As much. We just have to include them. Epik seems to be everyone's popular domain name registrar, after all. Here we go...

    ...

Shockingly enough, even our favorite name.com is well below NameCheap, and NC is definitely much better than Epik.com!

(Epikoholics, before you freak out ... have you heard about this concept called a different opinion? Good. Now breath out. Thanks.)

    ...

The first few minutes have been amazing. NameCheap.com's site is crispy, clean (overcrowded but clean anyway), AND SUPER FAST!

Our second impression will be added soon. We want to test quite a few functions and buy several products and domains. We cannot wait to use cryptocurrency and see how that goes. Overall, their site is absolutely incredible. 4.8/5 for now.

We only wish (knowing that Epic does offer more functionality) that...

    EPIK WOULD MERGE WITH NAMECHEAP.

The new company would keep all the designers of NameCheap and all the ideas and functionality of Epik, but NameCheap would be give more voting rights so the new site won't end up looking like a 2010 one.

    Imagine that!

Oh, one critical point about Epik:

Their sign up button is in the most weird place ever. We understand that they want their customers to simply choose stuff, stick their chosen hosting package or domain in the cart, and sign up organically. For those people who want to play around and see if they trust the site first, the location could not be weirder. Especially since the page and all right-hand-side options are so crowded. Not a biggie, though.

    Comment, like, subscribe.

Kidding. Simply comment. You would have done it anyway, right?

We definitely want to know what you think about NameCheap and Epik, and about your other favorite registrars.

Please do educate us, we're new. Speaking of that, we will be celebrating our first month as domainers tomorrow. On Sep 28 we had no idea this industry existed. Now we know it exists. It's cool and mad. We like the combo!

We, a bunch of people who decided to invest in domains together (one account, so far no major arguments - except over domains)

The idea is to publish things ourselves too. Kind of like your neighbor not necessarily taking you shopping just because you like the same supermarket.

It makes me think like you were previously on NP before but can't remember exactly what your username was, is it possible you decided to close your account at that time because of the "epik propaganda all over NP" ?

Otherwise, regarding NC, I have to admit I like them too. Not for the domain part, but the hosting one.
The pricing is a lot more affordable, it comes with cPanel. The only "catch" if it's one is that shared hosting plans are better than managed wordpress, so go for shared hosting. The extra features on the managed wp plans are not worth what you can get in their shared hosting plans for smaller sites with traffic.

Namecheap by some reason recently started to sell afternic domains cheaper. The same (BIN) domain would be more expensive if bought through GD or on afternic .com directly. The sellers are still paid 80%, no changes in commission for such sales. From endusers point of view, it probably makes them better. From domainers point of view (or fair competition?) - who knows...

Never been to NP, myself or anyone from our team. None of us knew about NP because we subconsciously only guessed this industry must exist. Domainers were like taxidermists to us. Except we knew that the latter job title existed.

Although we haven't met yet, we are ready to meet you (unless someone else spoke with you over the last month).

About hosting. No idea what NC hosting will be like. It kind of looks cheap - duh! to myself - and we'll probably only test it.

    Thanks for your extraordinary welcome!

We haven't touched Afternic/GD yet (and people tell us we shouldn't) but...

What difference are you talking about? 1-2% or like 10%?

This looks to be a part of their cut from Afternic MLS, not sure they can do that but it can only benefit all NC users and some domainers as it could help to have more sales in the end

    Fair enough.

Thanks for putting us in the picture. We hope to find a great auction house. Some of us talked about establishing a cool auction house as a group. I wouldn't mind that. Could be fun.

When it comes to registrars we want to find the best one and stick to it. As of today it looks like name.com is out.

Before I forget - any hosting service that you like the most?

If it's from their cut it's fair but if they managed to get a special deal...

I think u are bit new to domains ;)

eventually u will learn as we all do that nc is much closer to bottom of list than top... in basically all categories

but like all things domaining this takes some time and trial and error etc

    have fun ;)

ps epik is in middle somewhere
dyna and gd are topish... not to confuse with topless bahahha

What is Dyna? No one has mentioned them before. Even SiloDomains were mentioned many times.

We'll pick new skills up from all the kind people here. For sure. Thanks!

I wouldn't put GD at the top, more somewhere in the middle. But there is also Namebright with at-cost pricing for renewals/registrations (the catch is that there are less promos, almost none there)
$8.03, impossible to beat that for .com renewals
You'll have the same at cloudflare for transfers + renewals, the issue is that you can't reg domains directly there and that you can't list them on fast transfer services such as Sedo MLS or Afternic MLS and you have to use their nameservers.
Sav as well with $8.38 renewals and under-cost registrations + transfers, their interface still needs an upgrade but they are probably already working on it

Thx. I get the nameserver limitation but why not direct registration? Aren't they shooting themselves in the foot?

Their goal was likely to get more users onboard for their main product, CDN and anti-DDoS. Registrations were not needed as these can probably bring more abuses, probably also these users would be less interested in their main product but it's just an hyptothesis

That does make sense. The other day someone made a scheduled call with Epik or Dan - something to do with auctioning a really nice domain with them - and their top execs were running around like headless chickens because of a major DDoS. It was so important to them that even brokers were doing nothing else.

Companies will always buy anti-DDos packages. Until somebody comes up with somethin new. Can you think of a fresh server-based solution?

We are kind of worried about DDoSes because our plan is to develop tons of sites. some of them may get really popular.

I personally host most of my sites as OVH, it was already popular locally when I started building sites, getting interested in domains so I just went with them.
They include anti-DDoS by default to protect their infrastructure :)
(They also have something they call "VAC" to mitigate all ddos attacks in real time, by analysing incoming requests)
But otherwise, there are a few affordable solutions available such as Cloudflare

Is the VAC holding visitors back with one of those 5 sec countdowns?

No, it's only used to mitigate bad/suspicious traffic during ddos attacks, most visitors don't see it.
(It's a mix of hardware and software in their datacenter)

Maybe that's the reasons we enjoyed NameCheap MUCH MORE than Epik.
