Here's the numbers of the top 10 of tld regged. Might give some insight how interesting those tld are.

01. com 27,853,079
02. de (Germany) 7,517,840
03. co.uk (co uk) 4,631,236
04. net 4,589,187
05. org 2,900,716
06. info 1,144,888
07. nl (Netherlands) 1,097,463
08. biz 968,447
09. it (Italy) 903,365
10. us (united states) 794,485

fyi
cn (China) 595,550
ca (Canada) 402,702
org.uk (org uk) 338,901
jp (generic) 258,323
co.jp (co japan) 253,806

Couldn't find stats of the WS (Samoa, Polynesia) tld on the official site. Want to stress that this is a (midget)country tld, and NOT as many domain registers want you to believe a tld that stands for WebSite.

Any additions, comments, etc. to this list are welcome

Domainworldwide gives an idea but not really the correct numbers. It's weird because they link to the right websites of national registers. Looks to me the numbers on their website weren't updated for a long time.

check and compare with the national

2 examples:

Germany
http://domainworldwide.com gives 5,459,604
http://www.denic.de/de/domains/statistiken/ gives 7,517,840

Netherlands
http://domainworldwide.com gives 617,045
http://www.sidn.nl gives 1,097,463

As you can see differences are enormous

Think everything has to do with the politics of the national registers. In Germany everybody can easily and also cheap register a DE domain. The opposite is France where it's nearly impossible to register a domainname. And you can only register a name with generic fr domain if you have an official company with the name you want to register (this seems to be checked severly). See the stats are down on the official french register site, but when I last checked they only had something of 150.000 regged.

I think the .cn in china is similar with reg domain in France.
It's so difficult.

.DE, .CO.UK, .NL and .IT where a bit of a surprise.

I know .DE is becoming somewhat, more popular, but at #2, that's a surprise!

.CO.UK, I only thought would be around #5 or #6.. #3 is good for this extension.

.NL - WOW!

.IT, more popular than .US... Never though that would happen!

Thanks, they are very useful to me as well!
.de is definitely surprising to me.
.info is not bad either!
Thanks!

Interesting figures. Not surprised to see co.uk and de doing well, as most companies in Britain and Germany prefer to use ccTLD in preference to com. Interesting to see some other European countries going the same way.
