After three years of daily domain foraging, what does a hand reg. portfolio look like?

Without having seen other portfolios, I have very little information on what everyone else has been doing, so here is an actual portfolio.

PM me for a PDF file of the portfolio.

Of course, I'm sure there's plenty of dead wood here, but I figure, that's just a part of the process. More names will be added to the list. Other names on the list will be allowed to drop.

Most of these names consist of dot coms. However, there's a mix of several other extensions as well. The central focus is longtail keywords with reasonable exact search and cost-per-click, but there's also predictive, brandable, and just cool sounding names that may or may not do well once developed. Only time will tell. Overall, I hope I've created a balanced portfolio of names. The small percentage that have been developed so far pay for themselves many times over. I chose "average" names to test, so I assume the rest of the portfolio will also carry itself once developed. Of course, therein lies the challenge!

Feel free to peruse and leave comments. Comments will provide valuable feedback for me and other NP members who may be doing the same thing.

Interesting....

Wow..... I guess my question is - What's your annual renewal costs per these domains?

I was thinking the same thing. I hope you are making some parking revenue to pay for these names.

No doubt, it's expensive. Because my plan is to develop, these domains are not listed for sale. However, based on the number of unsolicited offers (and resulting sales) made over the past several years, I'm confident that the portfolio is more than capable of generating a reasonable return if I needed to actively market the names for sale. Many domains that I considered only average have sold to end users for amounts between $500 to $5000.

The objective has always been to develop and hold. Despite the challenges of development and cost of holding, I still think it's the best way to go. So far, twenty-five test sites have generated over $900 in their first year of operation as AdSense only mini-sites. I know there's much more that can be done to monetize these names beyond simple text ads. That's what I'm focusing on now, but it certainly is a formidable task.

Compared to what Wall Street has been doing with our respective retirement nest eggs, it seems the risk I'm taking is no more speculative than what the financial "experts" have been doing with our money. Assuming I've chosen wisely and do the hard work ahead, the prospects for future success should be good.

When looking to develop also consider the brandability of a name, your interest in the topic and what it would take to develop it. With a few sites I decided to outsource the development because I realized development of those topics would be more involved than my abilities. There are only so many sites one can maintain. I believe you don't need a .COM to develop.
