Fairly clear this is supposed to be an IDN, and a very poor one at that.- regged three weeks ago :td: - amazingly 7 bidders- I am sure bidder 7 does not realize what he is doing

http://www.sedo.com/auction/detail/duba%A1.com/43295_us__

I am willing to bet this does not complete. Yet another pile of garbage purporting to be IDN - or am I being a little harsh :? :cy:

i saw that this morning on sedo, but the item log does say it is a idn, so maybe they do realise it is a idn, but even still time will tell :)

Worthless ! I don't think the bidder is aware of it.

I had to look twice also! I thought it was a LLLL.com. Will be interesting to see the end use tho, enduser website Or if it is just re-parked as an "investment".

No, of course not, just clicked on it. If i knew it was an IDN I would never click on it.

Just had another look at this auction, surely sedo must advise potential bidders that it is an idn? i would certainly be looking at misleading information and selling something that it is clearly not!!!

Those who have bid on it i would advise contact sedo and explain that the whole thing is misleading and would imagine it is against there own t&c as far misleading customers.

It did say pretty clearly in a big red box while the auction was running that it is an IDN. However I suppose it is still possible that someone had seen it on the homepage and clicked on it and bidded without viewing properly.

Honestly, I don't even know why Sedo allows domains like this on their site -- it's not an IDN, it's a cheap wannabe-IDN ripoff of a geo.

Hopefully the buyer realizes the domain would have went for 3 zeros more if it actually was Dubai.com :)

It's not Sedo's duty to filter between real and fake IDNs.
The name is designated as IDN yet bidders don't do their homework.
A sucker is born every minute in this industry :guilty:

maybe sedo does not "have to" protect buyers,
but how does it look/feel to newbies like me if you do not get what they think you do get.
I for one "as a newbie" am so stupid to always mistrust everyone in this(and any similar )business and this forum and therefor mainly handreg things and do not buy from places like sedo/namepros or other domainers in general as I have understood nobody in the domaining business is even allowed to protect you as you are not "allowed to critisize sellers/pushers.
Do you think it would help sedo/domainers long term if they would try to protect "the suckers who are born everyday".
Same story if a newbie buys a domain with "a bad history" on this forum and nobody at namepros"is allowed/wants to" warn possible buyers as nobody "wants to/is allowed" to be negative in sales threads.

Also interesting this post where a blogger is attacked about being negative about that Fragger guy(I happen to agree with the blogger, but that is not important)
http://www.dotsauce.com/2008/10/18/grand-names-grand-waste/
What is wrong with protecting "the suckers who are born everyday".
You will make more money form suckers in an honest open way if they trust you, because "those suckers" still are not smart enough. That is my experience in other businesses.
By the way, from my experience everybody is a sucker in some area/field, whether social or businesswise".

Problem is, it's difficult for Sedo to screen every IDN auction and determine if it's a real word in some language. Nonetheless people are free to waste money on vanity.

There is no way you can acquire a name like dubai.com for $,$$$.
Those who are noob enough to believe that should learn to read the listings :]
Important Notice: This is a Multi-Lingual (IDN) Domain.
Technically you are acquiring the domain xn--.......com
People will get burnt by their own greed :lala:

Probably only a domainer would know what that means and someone who thinks they have bought dubai.com for $1650 probably has no experience with the industry. Hopefully Sedo does the right thing with this one.

It is up to Sedo to promote confidence in their own market (otherwise buyers will go elsewhere), ie by not letting people getting ripped off by this kind of thing.

I don't care if you are a domainer or not - it would take a real idiot to think they just won Dubai.com at a public auction for $1650. I am not really a car guy, but at the same time if there was an original Ford Model T for $1000 I would think there was something wrong. Sometimes common sense helps.

The average member of the public knows very little about domain values.

Well, I agree with that. But at the same time the average member of the public has never heard of Sedo either. People who visit Sedo are generally looking for domains.

Sedo mainly markets itself as a place for endusers - ie people who are not professionals in that industry.

In my experience the average domain buyers who is not a professional in this industry, ie "an enduser" will usually offer about 1% of the prices a domainer might pay. If the name is worth six figures they will offer $100-$1000. If it is worth $1000 they will offer $50. They don't have a clue on domain values, the industry is cutting its own throat to allow practices like the Sedo auction above.

Perhaps the winner hoping to sell it to someone even more stupid?

While it would be impossible for Sedo to screen every IDN, they need to make it painfully obvious to anyone purchasing any IDN that the domain may not be what it appears to be. For example:

********
This domain name contains international non-English characters which may be extremely difficult to distinguish from English letters, numbers, and punctuation; if you are buying this domain name because it looks like an English word, phrase, or number, be warned that anyone trying to type in this domain name would go to a different website (they would be typing English letters, numbers, and punctuation instead of the international non-English characters used in this domain). Keep this in mind when you place your bid.
********

Feel free to use this, Sedo! :D

EDIT: typos
