Or maybe he was telling the truth? And wanting some basic stuff, that even most NRA members are ok with, majority of the public, like background checks, is not going ape shit. It's just common sense. And the gun control stuff is more for the high powered stuff usually, that's open to debate. But handguns, rifles for hunting etc. will always be fine.

The truth?. I think he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I'd already seen various interviews of his where he mentioned that he was a gun owner, so he obviously knew the process of buying a firearm. His excuse that he wanted to see how easy or how difficult it was to buy a gun is pure baloney.

I see CDC (2010 information) states almost 48% of all U.S. children are born out of wedlock. Was 41% in 2009. (The majority were from under 30 females. No real stats on the contributing males.)

D-: Not a very rosy picture for the children

More stats:

Racial divides:

73 per cent of black babies are born outside marriage
53 per cent of of Latino babies are born outside marriage
29 per cent of white babies are born outside marriage

And educational divides:

92 per cent of college-educated women are married when they have a child
62 per cent of those with post-secondary schooling are married when they give birth
43 per cent of women with a high school diploma are married when they give birth

How is that ? Especially when the parents are living together as if married?

In Iceland, two thirds of children are born out of wedlock.

Plus, you have to remember, for all those kids born in wedlock, over half of them are going to have to go thru their parents getting divorced.

Why are you comparing Iceland to the US? Very different cultures and mentalities.

Nothing and I mean nothing beats a child growing in a stable family with a mother and a father and hopefully a sibling or two.

Yes indeed, that's another problems that affects children a lot. Lots of things nowadays that are very negative for Kids

Now you're against straight marriage? Look what they're doing in public. They have no right raising kids. I'm appalled.
Since about 48% of all U.S. children are born out of wedlock that means that a high percentage of those kids are part of those stats. I'm also appalled by this type of behavior especially from the girls.

Most of the "featured" women look like they came from low budget porno flicks.

Agreed. They must be getting some spring practice for their next porno flick.

Does porn get better the bigger the budget?

When social constructs are changed, we may not see the full results for 50 years or more. If the change was a bad one, the world won't fall apart right away - it will happen over time or generations. In the case of marriage, we'll have to wait for a large number of children of such unions to grow up, and for them to raise families themselves. The jury is still out on what much of Europe is doing.

While (in my own opinion) I don't see any real difference between an unmarried couple raising children together and a married couple doing the same, actual practice may be different. The social institution of marriage encourages couple to stick together to raise their family. I don't have the facts on hand, but it seems very likely that the lack of marriage would translate into more single parent households. And that has been shown to be a bad thing overall - especially in modern society, where there are no extended families around to help out.

There are always exceptions... bad kids from good families, great kids from broken families, particularly devoted/competent single parents.... but the value of social norms is in the averages.

I would like to see comparative rates of drug addiction/juvenile crime/etc. in Iceland over the decades between when marriage was common and now. It wouldn't answer the question, because there are so many variables, but it would still be interesting. Iceland is quite small, as well, so one is never far from an extended family or absent parent.

Nice post...:tu:

The government of Iceland is drafting plans to ban pornography, in print and online, in an attempt to protect children from a tide of violent sexual imagery.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/feb/25/iceland-seeks-internet-pornography-ban

How they will implement the internet ban on porn is another story. Still, I think it's a good move by the Icelandic Government, who seem to to have some leaders with lots of common sense.

So you approve of government censorship ? D-:
Would never have thought you were in favor of Big Government, nanny-style.

Censors are always promoting their crap under the guise of protecting children, because they view all citizens like children, not like adults.
People are still falling for PR nonsense... scary...

Government telling you who you can and cannot marry, what you can and cannot watch, are you ok with NY Mayor Bloomberg trying to ban big sodas and stuff like that? Your views lean very anti-freedom/choice.

There's already enough censorship around. Just look at how the Main Stream Media censors certain information so that the Conservatives look bad and Buck Ofama (love that name) :gn: always looks good?

So it sounds like you're OK with allowing kids to see porn? Tell me, what benefit to society does hard core porn bring, besides making some people a lot of money? what do you learn from it?

Yes I'm OK with NY Mayor Bloomberg trying to ban big sodas as it can only be beneficial for obese people, just like I'm fine with banning smoking from public places for health reasons, even though I'm no longer a smoker. But even when I was a smoker I agreed to it.

Things that are beneficial to people's health, I'm in favor of.

How about you; are you in favor of banning smoking?

So you need government to tell you what you can and cannot eat for you? Your smoking one is not a good example. Somebody drinking a big fat soda drowning in sugar has no affect on me. Smoking/second hand smoke can affect others.

Where are you from originally/grew up? Communist country, Portugal, here in the states?

I think Bloomberg's point is that people who habitually guzzle big sodas will likely suffer lots of health problems, which - if they're not insured - must be paid for by government (which means by taxes from people like you & me).

If you say that doesn't outweigh their personal freedom, I won't disagree with you. I'm just citing this point as an example of how unhealthy behaviors might affect other people (financially).
