Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

I'm hoping that this was said in jest. After all, you don't want .tel to be blocked in China. That's 1.4 billion customers down the drain.

DNSSEC

"callto:" is a skype extension.
On phones (including iphone), it's "tel:" which is the official prefix.

Lookup a .tel on safari on an iphone, and a single click will initiate the call.
You don't need any extra software.

Wow, while the Canadian Telsters were busy developing business at TelCamp Toronto 1, it looks like there has been some fun going on here.

It gets easier and easier as we go...

.tel is not a website. If you want to develop a website, go build a website.

However, as a developer, if you would like:

- Access to a database that is faster and cheaper than any other database (via web, handheld or otherwise)
- A system that offers a web-based front end for you to interact with the database
- High-end encryption for the database
- A system for managing the people who can view the database
- APIs for developing applications that interact with the database
- Open source applications and free code to speed up development
- A user driven community and responsive tech support
- A top-level domain that you own so your data can be found by who you want it to be found by
- All for $10

Then you may want to consider .tel as an option. .tel domains, in one way or another have been descibed as the above without any of the supposedly misleading claims made by a tiny minority of web developers.

---
I just read the FAQ at telsters; a quick note to my friend plaggypig here: I was churning code for the Z80 CPU at a time that you were probably not even born, so to discount the fact that people *did* use computers in the 90's is a serious joke. I first used the Internet the year Steve Jobs launched his "NeXT" computer, so after a little research you should be able to figure out the actual year.

Some FYI, although Plaggy was gracious enough to point out the rebuttal post at Telsters (thank you Plaggy for posting it), I am it's author.

How's this:

- My Apple II+ and Vic 20 would have crushed your Z80 and it's measly monochrome display
- How many BBS door games or extensions were you involved with, I know for me it was more than zero
- I had probably signed more people on to the Internet than you know before you even had Winsock configured

and now I'm taking my ball and going home :P

Feel free to develop your websites with PHP, AJAX and all the other scripts and markup you wish to use; if you don't want to use .tel for any of it, no problem.

MANY people right now are using .tel are and MANY others will, regardless of what the tiny minority of some domainers have to say about it. Most of the target audience for .tel doesn't even know what a "domainer" is, nor do they care. :imho:

As I stated in my post at Telsters, there is still nothing new coming from the anti .tel camp. Maybe the three of you should try doing a TelSucksCamp 1 and try to brainstorm some new points. Better yet, since there seems to be a theme among Telsucksters to reference days past, why not have a love-in or groove-on or whatever. :hearts:

Otherwise, updates about TelCamp Toronto 1 will be coming soon. :D

People do grasp it, it's the lower life forms that are struggling.

With any luck .tel haters will evolve up one step, like maybe to amoeba ... :bingo:

Gotta Go !

Hypothetically speaking, if .tel one day opened the DNS what would it do to the values?

Would it be any more desirable than .ws? Strong keywords of which sell for very little.

It's been stated numerous times that this is never going to happen, but let's indulge you for a moment. If it became yet another namespace for the web then you'd probably be right; just another worthless extension among many.

Now can I ask you a hypothetical? If .tel succeeds in its objectives and becomes wildly disruptive; tens/hundreds of millions of registrations, replaces phone numbers, becomes THE directory of people and businesses, new search engines thrive and/or Bing/Google plug themselves into .tel properly.. THEN what would market values look like?

A monopoly. Is that what you want ?
Personally I find that we have enough with the dominant leanings of microsoft google et al.

hey, there's a 'worst extension ever' thread just a few doors down. wouldn't it be copacetic to the max if the folks who're only interested in regurgitating old anti-tel arguments and putting down people who disagree with them hauled their broken records over to that thread? i would like that a lot.

A monopoly is one thing, market domination another.

You're free to do anything you like in any zone you choose :)

The values would be second to their .com counterparts. But what you have outlined above is an absolute best case scenario for every aspect of .tel.

I think it's more realistic to look at .tel for what it is today and assume there will be occasional improvements, but nothing earth shattering.

The initial .tel hype among domainers was over it simply being a contact profile page. Then as domainers realized that wasn't going to fly with the general public, other objectives were created by domainers that may or may not even have the support of the people who would have to make it happen.

Only second? Okay. We'll quibble over this when we get there ;)

The objectives haven't changed, but perhaps your perspective has?

.tel in your scenario would be similarly desirable as toll free numbers that spell a word are today. So take your pick: laptops.com, laptops.tel or 1-800-LAPTOPS.

Even if .tel replaces the phone number, I'm taking laptops.com come then for the same reason I'm taking laptops.com today over 1-800-LAPTOPS. All things considered, laptops.com is simply more powerful than 1-800-LAPTOPS and even a best case scenario laptops.tel.

The objectives haven't changed, but perhaps your perspective has?
For domainers, yes, the objectives HAVE changed over the past several months. .tel domainers are constantly jumping on a new wave to ride. Always looking for a new high. Think of the naysayers as your detox clinic.

This is what is meant by 'pumping' tbh.

For a newcomer your statements seem like a doorway to wealth and riches.

Whereas the truth is anyone investing in .tel today has a huge gestation period before they can make any money, if at all. The whole thing might not fly and those same people could be left holding the bag, like what happened with .mobi, .asia and .tv investors.

I have an interesting question for you and every .tel supporter here that believes .tel can one day rival .com at least with certain keywords.

If you were offered a choice between Pizza.com and Pizza.tel today with the catch that you take ownership in 10 years, which one would you pick?

(I have a feeling many .tel supporters will avoid answering this)

Just compare:
pizza.com $2 million
pizza.tel $2 thousand

The most Optimistic future
pizza.com $5 million
pizza.tel $50 thousand

.com is king. why do you go on with such garbage.

.tel has a shot because its made for mobile. will you still be at your pc in 10 years typing this garbage, or go with the flow? .tel is positioned to rival .com on mobiles
