Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

I've seen the "worse extension thread" on NP and dot tel is all over, it looks like it's the worse according to domainers.

In fact, Rick's sale makes me feel pretty good about names in my company portfolio like these:

LongevityTours.com (Not-To-Die-For Travel)

MobileWalkingTours.com (no more docents or borrowed tape players, just your GPS enabled mobile device and a head-set)

SanFranciscoTours.Co.Uk (major tourist destination from the UK)
Rick has a thing for finding prime end users. His strong sales shouldn't make anyone feel good about their own domains unless we're talking about similar names and similar selling skills.

And I hate to break it to you, but not even Rick himself could make your reg and renewal fees back on those.

Telnic has today updated the keyword facility to allow 2000 characters. This will help owners/developers (yes I did say developers - the word can mean many things) to increase search engine visibility as well as generally add useful information for the visitor.

what's the current character limit on header? i would find it more useful to allow more characters in header to describe the .tel site or provide more information. keyword is nice but it gets buried at the bottom

That alone tells you it will be a success

SEO guys are out of a job with .tel, so they're bashing it too :'(

Guess they can't accept there's such a thing as .com value and .tel value separately :-/

Wonder why they don't as much time bashing the Yellow Pages :|

Duh.:bingo:

By Way Of Analogy:

If an Oakland A's fan comes to ATT Park for an A's/Giants game and then sits in the Giants' section with the most loyal of Giants' fans and then stands-up throughout the game and continually heckles and rants against the Giants' organization, it's players, management, broadcasters and fans, what do you think will happen when the Giants' fans can't get through a single minute of the game without being reminded what a "loser" organization they're associated with?

Stadium management doesn't tolerate behavior that is calculated to stir-up emotions and create conflict like this. It's not only disruptive, but allows a very small number of people to ruin the fun for everybody else.

Free speech is great, but not when it creates an environment where others feel hesitant to express their views out of fear they will be made the object of another member's ridicule.

How about a little help from the management?

Yeeyah, sure! It didn't happen with all the turmoil in the .mobi forum area, and it was pleaded and begged for! So, now that that area is slow over there, .tel is now the new 'eyeballs' bait! And just wait til 'highly brandable' returns from the crypt (or 'ward') to chime in! Heh!

Y'all have fun now!!! :hehe:

I agree with you wholeheartedly, WordWalker. It feels to me, though, like there's a little bit of a lull right now. I believe the best course of action now is:

1) Use the lull to engage in substantive and constructive discussion of .tel
2) Don't talk about the disruption or the disruptors - some of the recent comments almost invite them to respond, and we know where that leads
3) DON'T ENGAGE THEM WHEN THEY COME BACK

Make private appeals to moderators to step in, if you like, but I really believe that if people stopped arguing with the disruptors they will go away. There's no point in engaging them. This isn't true dialog. Minds are closed on both sides. Let's talk about what matters to us.

I agree with both of you, focus should be on what is, or what could/will be (within reason)

and to the select few who have stated their opinion...is it really worth it
to keep going? Seriously??

If you can't play nice, don't play - you're not being forced to this thread!

Agreed! I know some multiplayer game creators believe in the wisdom of collective decisions and have provided players with the necessary tools to suspend or expel disruptive individuals who invade the game space. Sometimes by a simple majority or 2/3 vote. I'd like to see that instituted here.

On to the subject that forms the basis of this thread:

With the mainstream media advertising tools available today, it would not require a king's ransom to put .tel on the map. Why this doesn't happen with any of the TLD's is difficult to understand. However, Telnic has been much more interested and responsive to feedback than any other TLD sponsor, so I believe there's a good chance we may still see this happen.

Rick Schwartz talks about Madison Avenue's inability to grasp domain space. At the same time, I think the domain industry fails to understand what Madison Avenue is capable of doing if given the opportunity.

GetARoom.com is doing some serious spending to promote the launch of it's new business. Clearly, that same kind of effort could brand an entire TLD instead of just one website! Rick says that it's up to the end users to decide what TLD is in and what TLD is out, but I believe the "brute force" approach to marketing and advertising can heavily influence end user decisions.

How else could it be that I have a box of Sham-Wow(s)! in my garage cabinet?

To carry my analogy forward, here's the rub:

Nor am I forced to attend Giants' ball games, but I want to attend. Stadium management could say to me, "If you have an issue with the Oakland A's heckler sitting in the seat directly behind you, you can just listen to the game on the radio or watch it on TV. After all, nobody is forcing you to attend the games at ATT Park."

But that's not the position that stadium management takes. Stadium management will not allow a few disruptive individuals to define the experience for Giants' fans who choose to attend the games in person.

So why should a few disruptive individuals be allowed to define the end user experience in this thread?

It's about time someone has stepped in and made clear that we don't want to hear anymore boring comments from the same old people with the same old stories.

You know who you are.

If you have loads of time to waste go and do it somewhere else and annoy others.

I don't see anyone popping in and saying ".tel sucks and you people are idiots!" The naysayer arguments being presented are more than that, and cannot be branded troll posts.

If you want a more accurate stadium analogy, what is going on in this thread is akin to two fans sitting next to each other discussing who the better player is in a civil manner. Then the Giants fan jumps up, calls over security and orders that the A's fan be removed because he presented an argument using player statistics that the Giants fan didn't like.

Nobody is forcing the .tel supporters and naysayers to interact in this thread.

Click the names of people you don't like -> View Public Profile -> User Lists -> Add to Ignore List

There. Now you've got blinders on that allow you to see nothing but blue skies on planet .tel or planet .tel sucks, wherever you reside.

Free speech is great, but not when it creates an environment where others feel hesitant to express their views out of fear they will be made the object of another member's ridicule.

How about a little help from the management?
So in other words, you are blaming the naysayers for all of the .tel supporters that are surely lurking but afraid to post.
