Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

Sounds like it might be time to start your own DNS server for changing dns.

This wasn't supposed to be part of the deal.

From what I can tell, DNS is already set, but there are no instructions for what to do next. (Dotster's link for creating/changing .tel info goes to Telnic's public relations homepage.) This seems to be true at both Dotster and Dynadot (who expects to go live today, but is not yet live. DNS is already set for Dynadot as well).

.tel registrars are supposed to provide credentials and instructions for accessing Telnic servers to their customers who know nothing about about creating their own DNS. So this seems to be more of a linking/communication problem.

If registrars fail to facilitate the ease of managing .tel, then .tel will be doomed to fail. Part of the marketing strategy of .tel included the ease of creating .tel contact info for the average Joe AND not having to purchase Telhosting.

At least before GA, Telnic really needs to address this issue; otherwise, there will be a lot of unhappy customers.

So this needs to be addressed ASAP, by both Telnic AND the registrars.

Just received this message from Dotster:

This is being addressed. Thank you

Huh? It's like they don't know how to operate this TLD.

Could someone from Telnic PLEASE address the problem with Dotster.

THIS REGISTRAR IS SOUND ASLEEP.

On my Dotster account I am directed to change my contact at Telnic's homepage, which is nothing but Telnic's homepage, with no way to manage my domain/account.

Dotster is slow to answer support tickets, and when they do, they don't seem to know what they're doing. Dotster does not seem to be providing Telhosting, which was supposed to be part of the deal, right?

This is really getting frustrating.

*

*

My note to Dotster:

I'm going to keep complaining until you resolve my problem, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to contact Telnic and ICANN.

I CAN'T ACCESS DNS TELHOSTING FOR MY .TEL DOMAINS. This was supposed to be provided with .tel domains

Your people do not seem to know what to do with .tel domains. You provide a link to Telnic's homepage, but this page has nothing to do with Telhosting. This link directs to their public relations page.

PLEASE! Get in touch with Telnic to get an idea of how you can integrate .tel domains with Telhosting.

At the very least, give information to your customers as to when you expect to go live with .tel.

I think that you will find that your .tel customers will be very understanding if you keep us in the loop. However, your slow support and lack of knowledge is not very inspiring or reassuring.

Thank you for your PROMPT reply.

Hi Ms Domainer

I can understand your frustrations and I'm sorry your .tel domains are not live as many others are. We have spent a great deal of time working with our 130+ registrar community, providing them with all of the documentation, workshops and conference calls as well as account managers and are in constant contact with them.

I can't comment on the customer service of the ICANN-accredited registrar channel, but please also be aware that anything up until March 23rd in terms of access to your .tel domain is free; the term starts from March 23rd and registrars have until that time to provide users with log in credentials.

We're affording all the help we can in getting this set up as quickly as possible. Again, I'm sorry you're not getting a good experience from them.

Thanks, Justin.

It might be a good idea to send a message to your registrars regarding good communication to their customers re: status of the Telnic log-in credentials.

I think that they will find that telsters will be patient and understanding if registrars keep us in the loop.

Registrars who ignore our questions and treat .tel like other TLDs will not inspire assurance and trust.

One other question: are we going to be charged for access to the .tel DNS panel after March 23?

Again, thanks

We have provided all types of materials and communications for Registrars to use with their customers - without wishing to tell them how to manage their customers...

In terms of your commercial relationship with your registrar I can't comment on the T&Cs that you've signed up to individually with them or the services that they will deliver within the cost that you have paid as each one is different. Indeed, new business models are emerging with some providing the service on a monthly contract basis (over a year) with others looking to bundle the cost of the .tel into other services provided. So the traditional charging model may very well change. Added to that, as you know we have developed free clients to manage the .tel from mobile devices (including Henri's my.tel application that does virtually everything a web management console does).

Anyone heard about GrandCentral which just taken over from Google Voice. With the concept “One phone number for all your phones, for life.”

Even, the invitation or exist user with GrandCentral is now selling on eBay BIN from 75-200$.

I, first, thinking about dot TEL after read thru. Why don't they use dot TEL instead of GrandCentral. Or dot TEL could be the next move of this revolution.

BTW, I have never tried this services yet, as it's not in open beta, just skim all information their provided. Anyone have experiences, please share an idea.

Here's the thing:

.tel has been advertised to customers as a platform that will not require additional hosting for general contact information, so the possibility of having to pay an additional fee is somewhat troublesome.

I do get that those of us who may be developing extensive directories may have to pay additional for the space that we use; that makes perfect sense to me.

But John Q. Public who just wants to use the internet to update his .tel contact information may be very unhappy to see an extra (hosting) fee tacked on to his bill--definitely not good for the future success of .tel on a large scale.

Not all of us have an internet-based phones so that we can do updates on that platform; soon it will be standard, but it's not yet, so your free app will do little good for most of the mobile world. Heck, my phone doesn't even take pictures. Eventually this will change.

While you don't want to be overly bossy to your registrars, in the end, it WILL be Telnic who will feel the heat if users are charged an extra fee to manage their basic information from the web or if they have to pay extra to make changes in their panel, given that Telnic has made a big deal of .tel being a platform that does not require hosting.

I cannot be understanding this correctly. Is Justin's vague answer actually an admission that there are hidden charges headed our way?! NO where were we told in advance that there would be charges to keep our information updated!!! The whole point of Telnic's pitch is the ease of continuous update capability. No mention of cost. What am I missing here?!?!!?

I agree, hidden/unannounced charges would be something shocking and send a very negative message to the entire community, and that would definitely have an impact on the development of .tel.

I was thinking the same thing.. I do have a GC account. Great service to aspire to. I am sure we will see something like this soon. :) The only issue I have with it is that it tells you when you call that you are going through GC which may confuse people and customers expecting to hear your voice first

People, you've totally misunderstood what Justin was saying.. just chill out for heavens sake!

He was simply saying that your domain's renewal date has been pushed into the future to take into consideration the time for registrars to roll out their services - in effect the period between Sunrise and GA is pro-rata free.. it hasn't been included in the price you paid for your .tel names. So even though your .tel may not be available now, you haven't paid for service until GA anyway. Check the whois records to see when your next renewal date is (Thu Mar 22 23:59:59 GMT 2012). Your 3 year term doesn't start until March 22nd. Clear?

He also implied that registrars could sell .tel domains and extra value added services in all sorts of different and novel ways, instead of just the traditional $x /year model. You wouldn't expect anything less from such a groundbreaking platform, would you? :)

*sigh*

An arrow-straight answer from time to time would probably help to soothe the nerves. Perhaps Telnic will try that novel approach in the not-so-distant future?

Admittedly, I've missed some of the recent discussions here, but on this point above I can absolutely tell you from first-hand experience (see my other posts/topic), it would be REALLY really refreshing to see direct, candid, professional answers to any potential questions and concerns - nip this in the bud now before it spirals completely out of control (again, in my experience elsewhere), IMHO. :imho:

Thanks for listening, and all the best to Telnic, Telsters, and the highly brandable .TEL! talk:

Justin, are you going to guarantee the .tel users that their .tel hosting will be free for life?

People have already paid almost 1/2 grand for .tel names.
There are many ccTLDs and gTLDs having trouble selling premium keyword names for more than $100.

If the hosting cost is added, with no guarantee of getting advertisers for their .tel names, they may be holding a bag that is leaking money.

I now realize that registrars have until March 23 to go live and that the beginning date for domain registrations has been pushed up to March 23.

That's a good thing.

However, for basic setup and consequent updating of personal/business information, I would expect to be able to access my .tel panel via the web without being charged extra for a domain that was presented as not requiring hosting.

Even now, I can buy a .com and use Google's free blogging platform and never have to pay a penny extra for hosting. In light of Google's new GrandCentral, .Tel ought to be thinking of free panel access.

As I said earlier, I do understand that those of us to plan to create directories might have to pay extra for using extra space. I get that.

However, I am very concerned that if customers sign up for a .tel and then are charged extra to enjoy basic web access to their .tel panel, then this not only hurts me (as an investor), but it will hurt the growth of the TLD.

And why is Get your .tel About Telnic is showing every .tel domain footer? Is that because "Telnic" is providing free hosting? OR it will go away after go live period starts? I wonder nobody concern over branding their .tel domains.
