Hi

For this, let's assume that .tel will not be a total flop.

What type of keywords will be most valuable for this extension? Will it be geographical keywords, like newyork.tel, losangeles.tel, etc, or what else?

newbie notes!!!

i am by no means an expert!

but if you are new please listen up...

CandD or c/d or plain old cease and desist means STOP!

if you register what you think is a great name be sure that you have read a little bit about domain law before you begin. the us laws have changed in recent years and while under conservative control the laws have tended to lean in favor of established businesses over the rights of the individual.

this means that more so now than ever before that you are wasting your money if you register a domain that you can NOT defend the ownership of.
ie- if i register FORD.com my name had better be Joe Ford, and i had better use that domain only for family photos. if i knew, or should have known, that there is a Ford motor company i may lose the domain without any compensation. if i use the domain to sell ford products, then i am even more likely to lose the domain. if i try to sell the domain to the ford motor company then i am even more likely to lose the domain, again, without any compensation.

if i register the name of a famous actor or actress the same applies. in the beginning of domaining history this was not the case, but it is now. study the law before you mortgage your home and begin buying domains.

.tel is highly speculative and may or may not catch on.

the greatest thing that .tel has going for it is the vanity user. if my name is bubba i might buy bubba.tel (no longer available) and put my personal info on it just to be like ben in the video. my friend wanted to do just that but his name was gone, so i convinced him to go with "slick.tel" .... he now has his own personal "website" where people can contact him thru email or telephone and he only has to pay 11 dollars per year instead of paying for a website each month. plus he has a slick domain that his friends can remember, and he will be forever known as slick.

the personal nicknames, especially if myspace/twitter/etc hooks up with all of this, will be one of your sure bets.

businesses and services that are NORMALLY contacted by telephone are your next best bet.

picturesOfRoses.com will NOT translate well into a PicturesOfRoses.tel since few people want to know the telephone number of prettyroses. at the same time Roses.com could translate into a great .tel eventually since little old ladies order lots of roses through catalogs. you will just have to wait for the text savvy 23yo bikini supermodel to get old enough that she is text ordering roses thru her iphone. it will probably take awhile, but the market will be there someday. and when it is there you wont be able to show a catalog, but you can have a "push one button" and speak to the order desk, or push another button and get forwarded to "Roses.Mobi" (errr, or roses.com with mobile recognition)...

neway- please check current TM laws for your own benefit..

cheers,
and LONG LIVE MO... i Mean Long LIve .TEL!!!!!!!

the problem is see here is that most peopel are treating .tel as .com - you cannot develop a .tel the way you can a .com (womensfashion.com would be an amazing domain, womensfashion.tv would be great but come on .tel!) people arent realizing that .tel is made as a directory, for shits and giggles lets just say that it is developable as a directory + has strong seo potential: there are only a handful of names that would have any worth as a directory and those were regd pre sunrise for $300 a pop - everything after that is worthless IMHO, unless its your last name or a personal talisman. You might as well buy a .cc (it has more potential to make money than any .tel) development wise at least. You can turn any extension into a directory - blank page with contact info in text will load fast on any mobile device, what is the need for a seperate extension? I mean, you wouldnt exactly go to Garcia.tel if you didnt know that your friend Ben Garcia owned the domain, people would have to tell you to go there, its no different than any site. If someone could justify this I am more than willing to listen.

I don't think you full understand the concept of .tel and how it will change the way people will communicate.
There are many benefits to using .tel for communication, but here's just a couple for you.. you have someones .tel phone number in your mobile (yes, sure you have to know that persons .tel name first, big deal). What it means though is that it will be easier to memorize than a bunch of numbers, but also if that person loses his mobile or changes address, he doesnt need to bother updating you personally about it, he just changes the info on his personal .tel control panel.... beautiful and simple and this person is just a click to connect away. ;)

I agree with pretty much all your points.

I see .TEL as decent for two things.

1.) BusinessName.tel for a quick list of consolidated contact info
2.) PersonalName.tel for contact info.

I think many of the people in this thread have pipe dreams about .TEL
It reminds me a lot of the launch of PICK ONE (Mobi / Asia / Pro / Me / etc)

That is a domainers + investors optimism speaking. What i was saying was you can put a directory on any blank page with updated phonenumbers etc. how is .tel different than .me or .mobi, besides it already being setup as a directory/contact modus. as in your example, i tell you my domain is bgmv.com - i can update my info there. honestly, no one outside of domaining has any clue about .tel unless they are a huge corp and are just covering their own ass.

.tel is different in two key concepts from a .me or .*

first is cost for the vanity user--- the dot tel only requires one payment per year and their information is hosted...

the second is simplicity---- (although it could be easier) there is no html programming required, no java, php, xhtml, or anything else. i watched as a friend with NO internet experience set up his tel... he was excited about it and thought it was pretty cool, and was ok with 11 dollars per year. on the other hand at 19.99 a year for the .me plus +-$10 dollars per month for hosting (the average nooobie rate) equals $140 per year for a personal directory, and then trying to understand how to implement said directory......

time will tel....

Ok the maintanance cost is far lower for .tel and its easy to update - how will buying keyword .tel make anyone money? i know people say they can be set up as a directory and you can rent space and pay for this and that but realistically who would every do that? the second i see an enduser paying $$$ to place their product on a .tel i will shut up, until then i dont see the point - its like any other extension but far more limited.

Pong is simple too. How many people would opt for that over a Xbox 360 or PS3?

The extension is so limited the idea of massive directories is a pipe dream.

You can go to any number of sites like www.YellowPages.com and type what you are looking for and where. The use of .TEL is very limited.

there is one glaringly obvious thing you have missed about .tel and the mass market... this includes myself here. The only website I have developed is a business site selling watches. I spent thousands getting it made because (perhaps unlike you) Im not a developer or web geek that knows how to put up a website of my own. Now you might argue that there are a lot of free website builders out there with construction wizards attached and maybee there are, but even this is too much hassle and in fact I even havent investigated it for two reasons.. 1) it means it will have to be hosted for a set amount each month (aside from the domain cost per year)
2) Im automatically thinking that it's going to look very amateur
.tel solves a lot of problems for people that want a clean functional business card on the web, it also means that average Jo, who knows nothing about developing or setting up websites, can have a web presence where he can store all his contact info for his friends.
It's also a universal domain that everyone will come to know... it has branding potential as a contact hub alone, unlike a .com. Did I mention that .tel is also faster to download.
I've met so many busines people that dont have a website, dont want one because of the perceived cost of setting it up and running it, that love the simple concept of a .tel and what it will provide for them.
I think your in a pipe dream if you think many people would want to set up a .com or .me as simply a contact page (although it can be done, lol).

I just very well may the first .tel owner who has developed a creative writing project out of a .tel. Henri's allegory turned on the light bulb, and I ran with it.

I picked up memoir.tel as a GA pre-order and was just going to use it as a generic contact site, a keyword way of getting ranked. (I also have memoirs.tel.)

A few months back, I had posted some excerpts of my memoir on a blog, so I decided to work with the limitations of the .tel and see what I could come up with.

For text, I used the subdomain feature (I created 36 third-level domains). For each subdomain, I took the first sentence or two from each excerpt and posted them on the profile section (limited to 255 characters, only a few problems with some of my wordier first sentences). I included a link to the corresponding blog excerpt (a dot-com). In addition, I turned on the location button to where the excerpt is set.

The blog itself has no ads--I have good reasons for this, but there is no reason why a .tel site could not integrate with a monetizing .anything site.

Memoir.tel took me all evening to set up, but now I have a mini-mini site, with a very rich niche keyword.

Despite the long list of subdomains on Memoir.tel, the page loads fast.

Will Google rank Memoir.tel rank highly under the keyword "Memoir"?

Time will .tel.

Is that the same Henry that said you couldn't sell a domain for 60 days?

Wow, very good read, hadnt seen that one before (from sunrise period). The author was clutching at straws with many of his arguments on negative aspects... as I see it, many of these concerns will be forgotten in a few years as .tel takes hold. The comments underneath were very well thought out and gave a nice balance to the whole article. Cheers for the heads up on this one.
