Mobile web surfing is barely in it's adoption-infancy.

Calling .mobi a failure before the toddler can stand... chicken little.

Calling .mobi a failure before the toddler can stand... player hater.

Mobile is limited by bandwidth, hardware and immediate corporate ROI (despite industry growth projections).

We're 4+ years from being able to even think about calling for success or failure.

Just my opinions, friend ... the diversity of discussion here and sharing of these, at times, differing thoughts and opinions regarding the .MOBI is important, IMHO. :music: :hearts:

Also, agreed Reece ... mTLD has made a mess of the RFP's and its process in my view - and now implying that they may be auctioned instead is, quite simply, reprehensible! :imho:

Let's revisit the thread of NINE MONTHS ago, "I think the people at .mobi have thought this one through", and "very well thought out plan to capitalize on the next big thing". :guilty:

My opinions, reality, expectations may be different than others, but can anyone honestly now say that the RFP's were very well thought out? IYHO's.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

PS. Weather.mobi is a recycled trial ... it's the least significant "news" of the four initial RFP's, IMHO.

mtld is useless as far as I'm concerned... But companies (like BOFA and AAA) are backing the idea -- maybe these guys are our real backers :imho:

Does it not make sense that one can like an iPod without liking Apple?

Because I like .mobi but sure hate mtld :yell:

They work very hard to promote .mobi plus they work together with developers. They provide resources, tools, they introduced certification program that widen job prospect (I will take the exam next year), etc....they plan the RFP process carefully......but you hate them...WoW.....hahahahaa....what exactly what do you want from them......

Agreed. Offering weather.mobi up for bids seemed merely like a way to generate more money... Who could possibly deliver a better proposal than a massive corporation with years of experience in weather forecasting, online delivery of weather information, and that actually "test drove" the name?

1. I don't really know how we can say they work hard or not to promote .mobi -- we just don't know.

2. W3C provides half the tools they provide... Nothing fancy there.

3. Certification programs? That benefits maybe 1% of .mobi domainers, investors, and endusers. I don't need to spend money getting certified to develop a site -- really only good for lining WM's pockets. Still, I'd take a degree from Waterloo anyday over some mtld sponsored certification.

4. What do I want? I don't know... Maybe for them to come clean with the RFP's. Is that too much to ask? Maybe that they come to Namepros like they said they would? Maybe that they start getting more premium names into enduser hands -- whether of weather.com quality or not, I'll take any enduser over no enduser. I could go on... But this is really getting repetitive.

I think some people not only want their cake and eat it too, they want someone to feed them, help them chew it and swallow it, and for it to taste just as good as it looked like it in the picture, so they can feel they were 'right' in ordering it. Part of the 'if it doesn't please my expectations, it must be crap' crowd.

And some of us are of higher integrity than to pump something up merely for the sake of generating unwarranted hype.

accuweather.com
weatherbug.com (my favorite)
wunderground.com
intellicast.com
weather.org

i'm glad TWC got it, but i'm sure there were quite a few parties interested in it.

No doubt interested, but could any of them plausibly present a proposal in the same league as weather.com?

Not complaining or anything... I'm happy it ended up with weather.com, just saying that it wasn't much of a surprise and would have been more of a shock had they not chosen to go with TWC.

gotta say Reece you have an interesting POV. You note you won't really be affected if mobi fails or not, because you got what you wanted, prime keywords for your website project, yet gripe that things aren't going to your expectations of how things should be. Curious, after all this time, does your website Antioxidants.mobi currently live up to the expectations of what you are building it too? And if not, why not after spending the last six months hyping it the way you have???

I'm perfectly happy with my site. I regard my site as being on a timeline similar to the mobile web -- about 5-10 years before health becomes a more important topic (relevant to today), so I've made my investment with that timeframe in mind. Obviously if .mobi becomes big, less people will forget my address (a very common problem with .net), as well as give extra credibility to my site -- something many people wouldn't attribute to a site in many extensions available today.

Anyway I'm out of here. Said my bit, have a good night everyone

There are plenty of other weather outlets that could have put together a significant proposal. WeatherUnderground, Intellicast and accuweather just to name a few.

They participate in many domaining events around the globe, the Mobile Marketing Association, are championing the device database intitiative which will place them squarely in the middle of mobile content delivery (regardless of the TLD), and the various initiatives building in MAG just to name a few. Do you think they are just hanging around pubs in Dublin sipping Guinness?

If so, who provides the other half? Half of Ready.mobi is still a lot to accomplish, and there is little at W3C that comes close to Ready.mobi. Oh, and then there is Dev.mobi, do you think they pooped that one out in an afternoon?

The Certification Program I think is a valuable PR tool for an emerging developer looking to expand their business into the mobile web. It is quite affordable and could provide that extra cred to help them get work from a business customer. It also helps to reinforce a standards based coding methodology which most will agree is a useful concept.

It's obvious from this post and many others Reece that you have it out for mTLD. I'm really not sure why they have you so angry, but it is clouding your objectivity to some degree.

Not complaining or anything... I'm happy it ended up with weather.com, just saying that it wasn't much of a surprise and would have been more of a shock had they not chosen to go with TWC.
And there's a little organization called NOAA. Maybe you've heard of them? Granted, they're government, so who knows the legalities of them going for the .mobi, but still.

I work in the meteorology field, by the way (not a forecaster...rather, on the scientific publishing end of things, but with about as good a view of what goes on in the field as one could hope), and a very large majority of the scientific meteorological establishment thinks that the Weather Channel is a joke. There are many other organizations that could easily make very good use of Weather.mobi.

Not to say that it went to the wrong hands -- I think for the average user, it'll work out to be an excellent choice, of course -- but just that I can attest that there could have indeed been a number of other excellent organizations that could have handled Weather.mobi. It was by no means a given that they'd be the only ones deserving and/or wanting it.

am not sure, i guess in the moment, the .mobi domains are mostly with the sellers on domain forums :D

Hopefully they will visit soon and elaborate on their status/progress ... REALITY of the situation! :talk:

Again. Hammer. Head. Nail. :yell: :imho:

It's repetitive because mTLD has not lived up to the expectations of most, generally speaking IMHO ... and those few with rosey-colored .MOBI Glasses™ just continue to H.Y.P.E. the extension, while those who disagree, to varying degrees, with that rosey crowd just want some candor out of mTLD and to, finally, have their MANY unaddressed questions answered! It's a vicious circle, and the sad thing is ... mTLD could take a < couple hours a week to visit and bring some clarity to, for instance, the entire RFP matter (including its future), the nature & extent of the investments (level of commitment) by the backers, the means of getting literally 1,000's of reserved/premium domains into the hands of developers/End users, and just how many years they believe it will take to build the critical developed "ecosystem" ITHO's. This is among other questions surely on folks mind. The very recent announcement of the SOLE (1) RFP elevated the frustration level ... and now it's encumbant on mTLD to do the right thing and live up to its previous promise(s) and address those that have spent their hard-earned money, time, and efforts in their respective .MOBI investments (again, to varying degrees), IMHO. You should be commended for your patience, folks! :yell:

The circle, and frustration, will not end until this occurs ... in my humble view. There is simply not enough substance coming from mTLD (or from those, for whatever motives, who continue to hype the extension and cloud the quest for truth and candor) at present! :imho:
Reality is the topic, substance is the KEY!! :snaphappy:

Have a nice week, friends.

Why don't you go ask them Jeff what they are or aren't happy with then.

Most??? I think that is stretching it. Most rational mobiers accept it is going to be a process, not an 'appease the domainers' quick course.

Outside your little world here Jeff are many other domain forums and blogs, and I highly doubt they will go to them all, and spend hours each week visiting them to discuss their strategies with a bunch of anxious domainers! You forget you are the 'retired' one with way too much time on his hands. Others still have to work, and plan to make their businesses successful!
