Today we witnessed the birth of .MOBI.

The Iphone represents the single biggest positive SPARK in .MOBI news since the landrush.

My MOBI is the next ORG philosophy and prediction is going to occur faster than I ever imagined. My 5 year timeline is now 2 years.

WHAT MOBI ISN'T:
- MOBI is not a technological breakthrough.
- MOBI is not a solution to easily surfing the mobile web.
- MOBI is not the birth of the mobile web.

WHAT MOBI IS:
- MOBI is an outstanding global alternate to COM in the mobile space.
- MOBI has some level of awareness.
- MOBI will be utilized to develop cool websites for mobile surfers.
- MOBI is... the next ORG. Just as I predicted.

WHY IS IPHONE THE BIRTH OF MOBI?
Simple. Iphone will stimulate legitimate web development for the phone. As the development occurs, there will be little sparks of MOBI usage... both from people putting up personal sites with a memorable URL (www.eric.mobi - versus - www.ericjohntowskijr.com) as well as startups who are bootstrapped to pay for a great COM name.

IF you are watching for big relationship announcements from major companies regarding MOBI touting the technological benefits of MOBI, keep waiting.

IF you are waiting to hear about the birth of the mobile web, where MOBI will be a tremendous alternative to COM, then today is historic.

We have just witnessed something spectacular...

The birth of the mobile web.

The birth of MOBI.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Padawer

BELOW YOU WILL FIND MY ORIGINAL ARTICLE "MOBI IS THE NEXT ORG."

IS MOBI THE NEXT .COM?

No.

I believe that MOBI does have a positioning and mission statement that rings more true than .TV, .BIZ, .INFO and a host of other extensions. This positioning has a chance to be adopted, whether a need for the standard exists or not... much like ORG.

Ask your non-domainer friends and family about .ORG. What is it? "Oh, it's the extension for organizations." This is likely the answer you'll get. Did there really need to be a .ORG? No. Does it have a mission statement that was adopted. Yes. Where is that mission statement? Simple... it's .ORG. That's the entire mission statement.

Now ask your family or friends about .NET. "Networks?" The response will be more in the form of a question. Consumers aren't sure.

In my mind, a simple positioning statement that was adopted by the masses has permeated society and has achieved an incremental value over NET.

.MOBI has the benefit of being marketed 1st in the mobile marketplace with 300,000 registrations, a bit of development, some ink behind it in PR and a registry that is at least good at selling and strategy.

.MOBI will see some success because it will be perceived as a relatively decent option to COM in the mobile space.

This is an alternative view to those saying success will be born from the programming standard and consistency in web surfing in that standard brings. This is a nice element. And, as long as it sucks to surf the mobile web from a bandwidth perspective, MOBI has a chance from a consumer adoption due to technology aspects as well.

For those of you who are tech saavy - truly know all the alternatives in terms of mobile - the technology aspect is simply not as compelling.

Ultimately, in order for MOBI to drive more than speculative value, the fundamentals must be there. There must be cash flow from traffic driven by consumer awareness and habits based upon real marketed MOBI sites.

I believe this will happen in time.

When we view domain name sales in 2012, the MOBI value has the potential to look something like ORG.

So for the people slamming MOBI, you could be proved correct. It will take a while to know for sure. In the meantime, if it does work, it could actually work quite well.

Truth is that there is very little development on mobile web right now. So, anyone claiming victory or defeat makes me zone out.

For the people adoring MOBI, you have something in common with the current US administration. Remember when US invaded IRAQ and in the first 48 hours practically declared victory? That's what's happening here. You're looking at a landscape that appears promising. Well, we're 4 years into the IRAQ conflict...

My belief is that MOBI will prove itself out much like a popular country code or like .ORG. It will find a solid niche. It will not likely return the level of cashflow that a .COM, unless there is absolute adoption of MOBI as the standard. This isn't likely to happen because the technology exists to make .COM adaptable to mobile.

When .MOBI does become a nice alternative to COM and ultilized on the mobile space, the best MOBI names will be very much sought after as they will drive some traffic and be great for search results.

Remember this, .ORG, .NET, .EU, .DE premiere names bring a tremendous premium.

I believe that MOBI will be a top-5 extension.

In the meantime, I wouldn't overestimate the success of MOBI as the new COM.

There is no new COM.

There could very well be a new ORG.

And, in the very slim possibility that MOBI does become the #1 mobile domain name, or a strong mobile alternative, this does nothing to knock COM from the perch of King.

So how did Apple circumvent the Iphone trademark issue?

Good post jeremy. Maybe you could knock some sense into some of the guys at the "other" forum. What is your take on the iphone browser and its "zoom" capabilities? The technology is nothing new, and I know for a fact that all of that zooming can become annoying quite fast. I'd love to see a .mobi-compliant site on this phone just to see what we're in store for, but we may have to wait until June for that.

binaryman, As noted in the main discussion page, they are paying Cisco for the rights to use it.

Great logic Jeremy.

Big impact created by iPhone for brand marketers.

The biggest news for advertisers is that the iPhone will bring advertising to mobile phones in a way that people will embrace. The reason is that the iPhone includes an embedded version of the Safari browser.

This lets people browse the full HTML versions of their favorite .mobi sites with ease and zoom in on the content. This content, of course, includes banner and search advertising. Ads on .mobi sites will be browsable on the iPhone.

The iPhone is a game changer in so many ways for the Mobile Web, domain industry & Advercasting.

Seeing animated banners and adverts would be a pain for bandwidth unless you can turn them off .. I do hope this prompts the carriers to lower the costs of unlimited surfing outside their walled gardens.

I think with .mobi sites, there will be no need for the zoom feature. What we need is to see what a mobile site would look like on this phone, but it looks like we'll have to wait until June.

hummm... the images of Safari on iPhone show full .com regular pages... is your title ironic?

They show full .com pages that you have to zoom in on. I've seen this type of browser, and the test on those full sites are so small that you'd have to be Superman to read it. The zoom feature is ok, but it gets annoying really fast. With mobile-complaint sites, you don't have that problem.

thats my worry..

if the different companies decide to use .com for mobile browsing, whatz the point of mobi?

I really like the phone, but I really don't see many people buying into it for a long time. I don't know anyone, besides myself and some of the people here, who would pay that much for a phone. I think that Apple will have some success with the phone, but will have just a small niche market. I would think that their next move will be another standard ipod using the touchscreen feature.

Do you remember when the digital watch first came out? Wait.. im showing my age lol

Seriously tho, they were like $50. NOw you can get 4 ofr a buck.

The first vcr, was like $1000. Now, you can find one for $25. Same with dvd, they were $900 to $1500 at first, now they are around $50. I bought my first PC.. was a mighty IBM 1 gig. Cost me $3k. Do you see where I am going with this?

The phones will get better and they will get cheaper. Everyone will have one.

I have the time to wait lol
We have 2 years to start, then save for 2 years to pay for renewals for 2 more years. I think I can carry on like that for a good 5 renewals or 10 years before I lose patience :)

Oh and re: the digital watch... was a big deal when thery first came out lol
Y were not cool in school unless u had a digital watch!
